In Chapter 2, Nikolay Vsyevolodovitch Stavrogin returns after military disgrace and shocks the town with unprovoked assaults that doctors attribute to brain fever. His recovery, apologies, and departure restore outward peace, but doubts about his conduct remain, while Varvara Petrovna grows more private and intent on saving money during his prolonged travels.
