The Hollow Men
by T. S. Eliot · 1925 · Lectură de 2 min · 98 rânduri
The Hollow Men by T. S. Eliot is a poem about spiritually empty people who cannot turn their desires into meaningful action. It begins with a group describing themselves as straw-filled figures whose whispers resemble wind in dry grass and rats moving over broken glass. A single speaker then fears meeting certain eyes and asks to hide in animal-like disguises. The setting shifts to a cactus landscape, where people pray to stone images, and then to a hollow valley beside a swollen river. Eyes become a possible source of sight and hope, but remain absent. In the final section, a circling song gives way to repeated gaps between intention and action. Broken phrases of prayer lead to an ending marked by a whimper rather than a violent collapse.
Ce înseamnă, rând cu rând
Rândurile 1–18: The speakers introduce themselves as both empty and stuffed with straw. Their faint voices and images of dryness suggest a life without strength or meaning. Phrases pairing force with paralysis and gesture with stillness show their inability to act. They expect those who have crossed into death to remember them not as violent sinners, but as hollow figures.
Rândurile 19–38: The voice becomes singular and describes eyes the speaker fears meeting. In the dream kingdom, light, a moving tree, and distant voices replace direct contact. The speaker asks to stay away and wear disguises made from animal skins and sticks. These scarecrow-like details turn the fear of a final meeting into a wish to hide and drift with the wind.
Rândurile 39–51: A dry landscape contains cactus and stone images receiving a dead hand’s appeal. The speaker wonders whether another kingdom of death is equally lonely. Tenderness cannot reach another person: lips ready to kiss instead offer prayers to broken stone. The contrast suggests that longing for connection and worship meets something lifeless and unable to answer.
Rândurile 52–67: The group returns in a valley without eyes, gathering beside a swollen river while avoiding speech. Their blindness suggests both helplessness and a lack of understanding. Yet the eyes might return as an enduring star or a many-petaled rose. These images offer a possible hope beyond the fading stars and broken landscape, though the speakers remain empty.
Rândurile 68–98: A repetitive circling song introduces the final section. Repeated statements then place a Shadow between intentions and their fulfillment, making failure to act the central pattern. Phrases of prayer interrupt these statements but eventually break apart before completion. The closing repetition announces the world’s end, only to describe it as a weak sound rather than a powerful explosion.
