Zile fericite

The birds and the calm sea

The ancient story connects halcyon birds, usually identified as kingfishers, with a quiet spell at sea in winter. Their Greek name gives the phrase its unusual word.

In Metamorphoses, Alcyone grieves for Ceyx after he drowns, and both become birds. The winds are kept quiet while Alcyone nests on the water.

A happy time remembered

Today, the phrase usually describes a stretch of happiness and freedom from worry, rather than actual calm weather. It often suggests that life has since become harder or more complicated.

The childhood scenes beside the river in The Mill on the Floss show the sort of happiness the phrase can describe. Maggie and Tom’s early life at the mill stands apart from the troubles that later divide them.
