Ce se întâmplă

  1. M. Madeleine approaches the three convict witnesses, declares himself Jean Valjean, and asks the court to release the prisoner.
  2. The President and district attorney suspect mental illness and ask for a doctor to take him home.
  3. Valjean insists he speaks truthfully, admits his thefts, and contrasts the damage of imprisonment with the help of kindness.
  4. He identifies Brevet’s suspenders, Chenildieu’s burn, and Cochepaille’s tattooed date, convincing the courtroom of his identity.
  5. Valjean leaves without being arrested, while the crowd and court officials stand aside.
  6. Within an hour, the jury clears Champmathieu, who leaves free but bewildered.
