What if the army that makes you powerful also makes your ruler fear you?
In Friedrich Schiller’s five-act play The Death of Wallenstein, the Emperor’s strongest general stands between loyalty and rebellion. His soldiers trust him more than they trust the Emperor in Vienna. As the Thirty Years’ War continues, Wallenstein must decide whether to break with his ruler and seek a separate peace. Every delay gives doubt more room to grow.
Around him, private hopes sharpen a public crisis. Countess Terzky urges bold action, while the astrologer Seni reads the heavens for the right moment. Max Piccolomini admires Wallenstein and loves his daughter, Thekla. Yet following the general into revolt means betraying the Emperor and breaking with his own father, Octavio. Love, friendship and duty pull against one another.

A captured letter forces Wallenstein to decide
The play opens in a room full of globes, charts and huge figures of the planets. Wallenstein has just read the sky with his astrologer Seni. The stars look kind, and he calls the hour right for bold action. Then Count Terzky, his brother-in-law, bursts in with bad news.
Sesina, the go-between who carried the duke's secret messages to the Swedes, has been seized on the road to Regensburg. Terzky fears a whole packet of letters now lies in imperial hands. Field Marshal Illo argues that Wallenstein can no longer keep his command and also keep his innocence.

What is The Death of Wallenstein about?
It follows the Duke of Friedland, Wallenstein, the emperor's top general, as a seized letter pushes him to break with the emperor and turn to the Swedes. Friends, family and soldiers must choose between loyalty to him and loyalty to the empire.
Is The Death of Wallenstein based on a true story?
Yes, it is built on real events of the Thirty Years' War and the career of the general Albrecht von Wallenstein. Schiller adds invented scenes and characters, such as the lovers Max and Thekla, to give the history human weight.
Who is Max Piccolomini in the play?
Max is a young colonel who admires Wallenstein like a father and loves his daughter Thekla. He is also the son of Octavio Piccolomini, so he is pulled between his hero, his father and his oath to the emperor.
