Widzialne i niewidzialne in short

Visible and Invisible is twelve separate tales of the dead who will not rest, told by narrators who prefer plain speech to flourish. A surgeon records voices from dead brains. A rich widow frightens dogs.

What Widzialne i niewidzialne is about

What would you hear if a needle could read a dead man's brain the way a gramophone reads a record? In the first tale of Visible and Invisible, a London surgeon named Sir James Horton sets out to find the answer. His friend sits close to a steel horn and listens for a whisper.

E. F. Benson gathered twelve tales of haunting in this book. They take you from a Cornish fishing village to a Swiss ski resort and a Sussex village. You get all twelve in order, and what ties them together: guilt that outlasts the body, the limits of science, and a tenderness toward death.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy fireside ghost stories set in clubs, country houses, and quiet villages will love this collection. Fans of vampires, haunted rooms, and séances will find twelve varied tales.

A surgeon builds a gramophone for the dead

And the Dead Spoke opens on Newsome Terrace, a London dead end where nothing seems to happen. In its last house lives Sir James Horton, a retired surgeon and physicist who avoids almost everyone. His housekeeper, Mrs. Gabriel, was once tried for murdering her husband and acquitted.

On the night war is declared in August 1914, Horton shows his friend a frog's heart still beating nine hours after the frog was killed. He argues that the brain keeps a record of speech, like grooves cut in a gramophone disc. He needs only a very fine needle and a trumpet with immense magnifying power.

During the war he carries home scraps of brain from wounded soldiers. One evening his friend hears a faint whisper from a steel horn, and then two bars of Tipperary, sung from the brain of a boy who died that day. Horton cannot see why anyone would call the work terrible. Then he adds a second battery, and wonders aloud about a whole head, or a whole body.

Knowledge pursued without pity can cost more than its discoverer imagines.

Pytania o Widzialne i niewidzialne

What is Visible and Invisible about?

It is a collection of twelve ghost stories by E. F. Benson. They cover haunted houses, vampires, séances, a mountain legend, and a dying man's hopes for the afterlife, often through plainly told personal accounts.

What does Negotium perambulans mean?

It is a Latin phrase from Psalm 91, which the tale translates as the pestilence that walketh in darkness. In the story it names a sluglike creature depicted on a church screen and feared by the people of Polearn.

Who is Sir James Horton in the first story?

Horton is a retired surgeon and physicist in London who lives alone on Newsome Terrace. He works on a device to read recorded speech from the brains of the newly dead, and he uses his friend as a witness.

Are the stories meant to be true, and when were they written?

They are fiction, written in the early twentieth century. Benson tells them as personal accounts, and the narrators often leave it to the reader to choose between a haunting and a natural explanation.

Is Visible and Invisible easy to read?

Each tale is a self-contained story with a clear voice, a quick start, and a firm sense of place. You can read them one at a time, in any order, and follow each without having read the rest.
