Vathek in short

Vathek is the story of a ruler who has everything and cannot stop reaching for more. He buys marvels from a stranger, trades his faith for a promise, and commits crimes that his mother urges him to multiply. All the while the tale keeps its wry voice.

What Vathek is about

What happens when a ruler who owns every pleasure on earth still wants more? Vathek, the ninth caliph of the Abassid dynasty, has five palaces built just for his senses, yet he still craves greater knowledge.

Vathek: An Arabian Tale was written by William Beckford, an English author of great wealth and strange tastes. It borrows the look of the Arabian Nights and turns it toward horror and sharp comedy. You meet the caliph, his scheming mother Carathis, a hideous merchant called the Giaour, and two cousins caught in the caliph's path.

Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you love dark fairy tales, Gothic atmosphere, sharp satire and Eastern settings full of genii, magic and feasts. It suits readers who like wicked characters and wild invention.

A caliph who wants to know everything

Vathek is the grandson of Haroun Al Raschid and comes to the throne young. When he grows angry, one of his eyes becomes so terrible that the person it falls on drops backward and sometimes dies.

His father built the palace of Alkoremmi above the city of Samarah. Vathek adds five more palaces, one for each sense. Yet none of it satisfies him. He wants to know even sciences that do not exist. The Genii help him finish a tower. When Vathek climbs its eleven thousand steps, he sees men as small as ants and nearly worships himself. Then he looks up and finds the stars as far away as ever.

He believes the stars promise that a stranger will bring him wonders. Soon a man arrives so ugly that the guards shut their eyes as they lead him in. He carries slippers that walk and sabres with blades of dazzling light. The stranger will not speak. He laughs, and by dawn his cell is empty and the guards are dead. The sabres carry a warning that disaster befalls anyone who pursues knowledge best left beyond mortal reach. Vathek pays no attention.

When a person cannot bear any limit, curiosity becomes the first step toward ruin.
