Pod zielonym drzewem in short

Under the Greenwood Tree follows village life and courtship through the changing seasons in the parish of Mellstock. Dick Dewy falls for Fancy Day, wins her promise, argues over dresses, and stands before her father hoping for approval. Along the way a farmer and a young vicar enter the picture, and the old string choir is put out of its gallery.

What Pod zielonym drzewem is about

Picture a cold Christmas Eve in a country parish. A young man walks a dark lane under whispering trees, singing as he goes. He is heading for his father's cottage, where a fresh barrel of cider waits and the village choir is about to gather. By midnight the choir stands beneath a schoolhouse window, and a girl lifts the blind.

Under the Greenwood Tree is a short novel by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1872. It is a warm, funny courtship. Dick Dewy loves Fancy Day, the new schoolmistress, but two rivals stand in his way, and the old choir faces replacement by an organ.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy village comedy, gentle love stories, country music and customs, and talk full of humour. It suits anyone who likes warm characters and careful nature writing.

A midnight carol and a face at the window

The story opens with the choir of Mellstock parish gathering on Christmas Eve. Dick Dewy walks the lane singing, and he meets the other singers on the way to his father's house, where Reuben Dewy is tapping a cask of cider.

The talk wanders, and nothing much happens, yet you come to know every voice in the room. Mr. Penny the shoemaker tells the company about the new schoolmistress. Then the band sets out with lanterns, fiddles and a bass viol, visiting house after house in the snow.

At the new schoolhouse they play three carols and hear nothing. Then a candle appears, a blind rises, and a girl with loose dark hair says thank you, singers. Dick slips away from the party, and his father finds him staring at her lit window. The next morning he blacks his boots three times for church, hoping to see her there.

One glimpse at a window is enough to start the whole story.

Pytania o Pod zielonym drzewem

What is Under the Greenwood Tree about?

It follows a year in the village of Mellstock. Dick Dewy, a carrier's son, falls in love with the new schoolmistress Fancy Day, while a farmer and the vicar also take interest in her, and the old church choir is replaced by an organ.

Why was it first called The Mellstock Quire?

Hardy first meant that title because the book pictures the village church band, its singers and fiddlers. A quire means a choir. Later editions kept Under the Greenwood Tree as the main name and added the old title as a subtitle.

Is Under the Greenwood Tree a true story?

It is fiction, first published in 1872. Hardy said in his preface that it gives a faithful picture of country church musicians and their customs from roughly fifty or sixty years before, based on real people and real habits.

Is Under the Greenwood Tree easy to read?

It is one of Hardy's shortest and most cheerful novels. Its scenes are short, much of it is lively dialogue, and the humour makes it approachable. The country speech is easy to follow, especially when read aloud.

What is the main message of Under the Greenwood Tree?

The book celebrates ordinary village life, its music and its humour, and shows how love mixes honesty with vanity. It also gently mourns the fading of old customs, while treating those who bring change with fairness.
