Tom Swift i Powietrzny Zwiadowca in short

Tom Swift and His Air Scout follows a young inventor who wants to give his country a flying machine that makes almost no noise. He studies sound, survives a blown-up engine, and fends off a spy and a gold-toothed intruder, while a rival firm keeps raising its job offers. The story then darkens.

What Tom Swift i Powietrzny Zwiadowca is about

What would it mean to fly through the night so quietly that no one below hears you pass? Tom Swift, a young inventor in the town of Shopton, sets out to find out.

Tom Swift and His Air Scout was written by Victor Appleton, the pen name used for the many Tom Swift adventures. It is an invention story from the years of the First World War. Tom wants to build a silent aircraft for scouting at the front and give it to Uncle Sam.

Dla kogo. This book suits you if you enjoy inventors and their workshops, early aeroplanes, spies and sabotage, mysteries with clues to follow, and warm, funny friendships.

The story in 8 parts

A sky ride sparks a silent idea

The story opens on Tom Swift's private airfield, where Mary Nestor stands beside a two-seat airplane and asks if it is really safe. She promised long ago to fly with him and has kept finding reasons to put it off. Tom promises it is as safe as a church.

Before the airplane can move, Mr. Wakefield Damon runs across the field, waving his arms. He is a friend who blesses everything in sight, from his mouse trap to his shoelaces. Tom cannot stop, because he fears Mary will change her mind. The engine bursts into life with a bang and drowns the little man out.

In the air, the airplane drops into an air pocket, and Tom breaks a control while trying to steady it. Mary screams that she will jump. Tom has to fit a spare control, keep her calm, and make himself heard through the speaking tube over the roar of the motor.

If an engine were quiet, Tom thinks, a pilot could talk to a passenger, and an aircraft could creep up on enemy lines without warning.

A problem you feel in your own ears can become the best idea you ever have.
