Varmint in short

The Varmint follows Dink Stover from his arrival at Lawrenceville through his return as house president. He starts as a boaster and a prankster. A dropped fly ball, a lonely spring of being shunned, and a captain's lessons teach him that nerve is not enough and that respect has to be earned.

What Varmint is about

What happens when a fifteen-year-old steps off a train with stolen railroad signs hidden in his shirt, then tells a stagecoach driver that he once pulled a knife on a man? Dink Stover invents a dead mother, a shipwreck and a ship's cat. The quiet passenger behind him is the Latin master who will teach him for years.

The Varmint was written by Owen Johnson, who drew on his own schooldays, and is set at Lawrenceville, a New Jersey boarding school. You get a boy's world in full, with hot dogs at Laloo's, strawberry jiggers, and a code of rules that nobody writes down. Dink breaks the rules, pays for it, and slowly learns them.

Dla kogo. Readers who love school stories, practical jokes, clever schemers and football will feel at home here, as will anyone who remembers a first term of feeling out of place.

The story in 10 parts

A Teller of Tall Tales Arrives

Dink Stover steps off at Trenton station with his pockets full of loot. Two gilt signs from a railroad car stick to his back, and two nickel knobs from a washbasin weigh down his coat.

On the stagecoach to Lawrenceville he sits beside the driver and decides to be a legend. He says his last school expelled him for pulling a knife on a man who insulted his mother. Then he adds that she died in a shipwreck saving him, and that only he and the ship's cat survived. The dignified passenger behind him listens with a twitching lip.

Dink does not know that this man is the Latin master, called The Roman. He takes him for a traveling salesman, calls him old sport, and promises to own the house within a week. When the slate roofs and the water tower rise over the hills, he stands up in awe, and for a moment the act drops away.

Tall tales buy a boy a grand entrance and send the bill to the next morning.

How it ends (spoiler)

Dink takes a special Latin examination in The Roman's study. The master leaves the room and trusts him alone, and Dink cannot cheat. He hands in a blank sheet with only his name, yet The Roman says it will just about pass. Dink, who is chosen captain, finally sees that The Roman has stood by him throughout. He goes to apologize, and the master tells him that the boy who causes the most trouble is the one most worth saving.
