Opowiadacz in short

The Story-Teller gathers twelve short tales under the figure of a traveling teller who comes with a harp and a welcome. Most are tales of small choices. A blacksmith shoes a horse for the cause of peace.

What Opowiadacz is about

Imagine a knock at the door on a winter night. Outside stands a traveler with a harp at his side, and every child in the house runs to the fire. That is how Maud Lindsay opens The Story-Teller, a book of twelve tales for the young.

Her stories belong to a world of kings, blacksmiths, fairies and goblins, and each carries a saying that comes round again and a quiet lesson about courage, kindness or keeping faith.

Dla kogo. Readers who love fairy tales about kings and fairies will enjoy this collection, as will those who delight in Christmas stories, recurring refrains, and old-fashioned tales for children that suit reading aloud beside the fire.

A traveling teller brings tales to every hearth

Before the first tale comes a greeting. Maud Lindsay pictures olden times, when the Story-Teller knocks at the door of a cottage or a hall. He comes at Christmas, at New Year, or on All Hallows Eve when chestnuts roast in the coals, and he is always welcome.

He has traveled many miles and knows many tales of the wide world.

The children gather round him, and the whole house goes as still as midnight when he speaks the old words, Once upon a time. Lindsay says he believed that joy and sorrow together shape life. The children learned to share in others' happiness and feel sympathy for their sadness, and in time they grew into good men and women.

Stories told with warmth teach a child to feel with other people.

The harper reaches his fireside, Karl learns the word that keeps him safe, and the old woman bakes her dumpling.
