Towarzyski duch in short

The Sociable Ghost follows one night in Trinity churchyard. A reporter, hurt by love and ashamed of his own temper, gives a pipe and a flask to a talkative ghost and is allowed to join the yearly reunion of the dead. Beneath the church he sees a marble hall, a banquet, a poker lesson, a ball and a convention.

What Towarzyski duch is about

A young reporter sits alone in the dark of Trinity churchyard in New York. He kicks at a stray dog and throws a stone at a starving kitten, and he hates himself for it. The girl he loves is to marry a French nobleman the next day. Then, close to midnight, the graves open, and the first ghost he meets wants only a pipeful of tobacco.

The Sociable Ghost is a comic tale of the underworld by Olive Harper. It follows one night when old ghosts hold a banquet, a dance and a convention beneath the church. You get a talkative sea captain, a crowd of ghosts with grievances, and a serious thread about honesty and pride.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy ghost stories told with a wink, sharp jokes about manners and money, old New York, and a storyteller who lets the dead say what the living never dared to hear.

The story in 11 parts

A heartbroken reporter meets a thirsty ghost

The story opens at the northwest end of Trinity Church, where a flat stone covers an old family vault. A young reporter sits there in the dark. He has written up the wedding presents for his paper that day, and the bride is the girl he loves.

His mood is so bad that he kicks a little dog and throws a stone at a kitten. It is the first time he has hurt an animal, and his conscience stings. Then a shadow rises from a grave, rattles like dry oyster shells, and complains that without tobacco he is tempted to stay dead.

The reporter fills his pipe and offers it. A flask of whiskey follows, and the ghost drinks toast after toast. The reporter names him the Sociable Ghost, and he keeps quiet and lets the ghost talk, as a good reporter does.

A small kindness opens doors that questions never could.

How it ends (spoiler)

At dawn the ghosts return to their graves. In the churchyard each one scours the flattering words from his own headstone, and the Sociable Ghost says goodbye until next year. The reporter wakes on the slab with an empty tobacco paper and no whiskey, though the night rain has left his clothes dry. His heartache over the wedding has softened. He means to keep his two appointments, but he never finds the kitten or the dog.
