Czerwony Trójkąt in short
The Red Triangle is one long chase told in six cases. It starts with a diamond theft in a London office and a dead man marked with a red triangle. It moves through a terrified scientist, a cipher in a key, a burned barn, a stolen naval code and a trap on a lonely marsh.
What Czerwony Trójkąt is about
A pale man waits at an office door in London, staring up and down the street. Soon he tells a detective that fifteen thousand pounds of diamonds have vanished from a room with only one door. Nobody walked past him, and the window stayed shut.
That is how The Red Triangle begins, the first of six linked cases. Arthur Morrison wrote them about Martin Hewitt, a round, friendly private investigator, told by his friend Brett, a journalist who helps with the chasing. A red triangle stamped on the foreheads of victims ties the cases together. You get all six, with the methods and the way the pieces fit.
Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy clue-hunting, sealed-room puzzles, secret ciphers and chases through gaslit London will find plenty here. It suits anyone who likes a warm, clever detective.

Samuel's diamonds vanish and a key appears
Lewis Samuel, a nervous diamond dealer, sends for Martin Hewitt. Fifteen thousand pounds of cut stones have vanished from the room of a commission agent named Denson. Samuel sat behind a glass screen for two hours and a quarter, and no one passed him. He forbids the police.
Hewitt finds the only way out, a hinged fanlight high in the wall. A slim, active man could slip through it. Then he begins to doubt his client, because Samuel says he called for help at once, yet he waited an hour on the steps outside.
That night a newspaper reports a dead man in laborer's clothes. It is Denson, and in his pocket is a bright new key. It opens a back door, and a second new key fits the fire hose cupboard. Under folded chamois leather lies a bag of diamonds. The jewels belonged to a lady who had secretly sold her gems. Test every client's story against the facts, because a gap in it can be the doorway to the real case.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Martin Hewitt A stout, friendly private investigator who solves cases through small details, honest clients and careful patience.
- Brett Hewitt's friend, a journalist who tells the stories and helps by watching, following and sometimes running into danger.
- Inspector Plummer A Scotland Yard detective and Hewitt's old friend who leads each police inquiry and wants the murderer caught.
- Lewis Samuel A nervous Hatton Garden diamond dealer who loses a fortune in stones and hides who really owns them.
- Jacob Mason A wealthy amateur chemist, haunted by an oath he cannot break, who seeks help too late.
- Victor Peytral A West Indian merchant with a daughter and an invalid wife, who carries a grudge from years before in Haiti.
- Reverend James Potswood A generous, honest clergyman who brings Hewitt into the Mason case and trusts too easily.
- Mayes A pale, polite schemer with many names and glittering eyes who gathers criminals and offers a kingdom for loyalty.
How it ends (spoiler)
The trap collapses, but Hewitt leaps clear. Mayes fires from the top of the ruined wall, and Victor Peytral springs on him from behind. Both men fall with the crumbling brickwork. Mayes never wakes and dies in hospital, and the soapstone stamp for the Red Triangle is found in his pocket. The forger Sims then explains the mark's use, and Hewitt's theory of hypnotism explains how the gang was ruled.
