Poeta przy stole śniadaniowym in short

The Poet at the Breakfast-Table is a book of talk. A poet, an old Master, a beetle scholar, a young astronomer, a story writer and a kind Landlady share breakfast, and their conversations wander from stars to rhymes to doctors to doubt. Holmes lets each voice be funny and wise by turns.

What Poeta przy stole śniadaniowym is about

Picture a long table in a Boston boardinghouse, set for breakfast. An old man with round spectacles lays down the law on beetles, stars and the Order of Things, while a small boy with a popgun waits to stop him mid-sentence.

The Poet at the Breakfast-Table is the third of the Breakfast-Table books by Oliver Wendell Holmes, a Boston physician and writer, published in 1872. Holmes builds a light frame of mealtime talk around a handful of boarders. Into it he pours essays, memories, jokes and poems. You get comedy, argument and a quiet love story in one place.

Dla kogo. Readers who love warm, rambling talk, gentle humor and sharp portraits of eccentric people, and who enjoy poems tucked inside essays.

The story in 10 parts

Talk to discover what you think

The book begins with a small joke about a man interviewing himself. The old man says talking helps him discover his thoughts, much as a schoolboy empties his pockets to inspect them.

He gives the idea odd pictures. An old thought is squeezed out of shape by the others packed around it, like a raisin that was once a grape. Some doubts breed in the dark like the blind fish of Mammoth Cave.

Then the Poet points to the real talker of the table, an old man with iron-gray hair and large round spectacles. He is honest, fond of a half-truth, and carries a twinkle that warns you when he does not mean to be taken literally. You do not need to know your mind before you speak, and a good listener helps you find it.

Talk to learn what you think, and pick listeners who make you think.

An old house holds a whole childhood

Before he introduces more boarders, the Poet reads a long piece about his birthplace, the gambrel-roofed house beside the Harvard Common.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • The Poet The narrator, who writes down the table talk, loves words and memories, and quietly hopes his friends find happiness.
  • The Master A retired college official with round spectacles who studies the Order of Things and delivers opinions like imperial edicts.
  • The Landlady A warm, talkative widow who runs the boardinghouse, adores her son, and weeps easily over old troubles.
  • The Scarabee A dry, stooped beetle specialist who wants to settle whether a bee parasite is the larva of the Meloe.
  • Scheherazade The Young Girl, who writes a new serial story every week for a newspaper and longs for kindness.
  • The Young Astronomer A pale stargazer in a private observatory who writes questioning verses about fame, faith and loneliness.
  • The Lady A gentlewoman fallen on hard times who keeps to herself, befriends the Young Girl, and treasures a simple faith.
  • That Boy A gap-toothed child with a popgun who is always wedged between chairs and always ready to fire.

How it ends (spoiler)

The Landlady announces that she will stop taking boarders at the end of the year, and the company scatters. The Lady, whose family claim to old property is settled in her favor by the Register of Deeds, returns to a house of her own. The Young Astronomer asks the Young Girl to break his chain on the Common, and she accepts, so Scheherazade stops writing stories. Even the Scarabee smiles once, and the Poet takes his bow.
