Krzyk in short

The Outcry follows a single question through three books. A noble owner is offered a fortune for a treasure, his family is short of money, and a young expert with a clever press campaign turns a private sale into a public cause. The people around him act from mixed motives, and James lets each one speak in their own voice.

What Krzyk is about

What happens when a rich American wants the loveliest portrait in an English country house, and the owner is proud, short of cash and surrounded by people who want him to sell? That is the problem at the heart of The Outcry, a comedy of manners by Henry James. It opens on a spring afternoon at Dedborough Place, where a school feast fills the park and an American collector is expected.

Wealthy American buyers were carrying old masters away from British houses, and newspapers had begun to protest. You get that moment in three books, told through quick, witty talk.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy sharp conversation, country house settings and moral puzzles about money and art will love this book. It also suits admirers of comedies of manners and family quarrels.

A calm house is full of quiet bargains

The novel opens at Dedborough Place on a spring afternoon. The park is open to four hundred and fifty schoolchildren, and Lord Theign is giving them advice at the top of his voice.

Two visitors reach the hall before their host returns. Lady Sandgate is a handsome widow and a close friend of the family. Lord John is a slight, neat young man who has driven over with a guest.

Lord John hopes to marry Lady Grace, the younger daughter of the house. His mother, the Duchess, will wipe out the huge gambling debts of Grace's sister if the match is made. Lady Sandgate guesses all of this. She also owns a splendid Lawrence portrait and is quietly eager to sell it. The guest everyone awaits is Mr Breckenridge Bender, who has come to see the Sir Joshua portrait called The Beautiful Duchess of Waterbridge.

Beauty and bargaining share the same rooms.

Pytania o Krzyk

What is The Outcry by Henry James about?

It is a comedy of manners about an English lord whose family treasure, a painting, is wanted by a rich American collector. Debts, a marriage plan and a newspaper campaign push the owner to a hard choice about selling.

Who is Mr Bender in The Outcry?

Breckenridge Bender is a wealthy American collector who buys famous pictures for large sums in cash. He wants only very costly works, and he speaks in plain, cheerful American phrases that amuse and puzzle the English.

What is a Mantovano in The Outcry?

Mantovano is the name of a rare painter, of whom only seven works are known. Hugh Crimble suspects that the Dedborough portrait, always labelled a Moretto, is really his eighth, which would make it far more valuable.

Was The Outcry written as a play?

It began as a play for the stage, then James turned it into a novel, published in 1911. The book keeps that origin in its scenes, its entrances and its lively dialogue.

Is The Outcry easy to follow?

Much of the book is lively conversation among a small group of people, and each scene has a clear question to settle. The humour, the quick exchanges and the short chapters make the story approachable.
