Nowy lokator in short
The New Tenant follows a murder on a Northshire moor and the woman who sets out to name the killer. Helen Thurwell hires detectives against the quiet man next door, then falls in love with him, then fights for him when the law closes in. Behind the plot lies an older story of a broken marriage and a vow of vengeance.
What Nowy lokator is about
A baronet comes home after fifteen years abroad, goes out with a shooting party on the twelfth of August, and never reaches the lunch table. He lies on the Northshire moor with a small dagger in his heart. Who would do such a thing, and why is the quiet man from the cottage on the cliff walking so calmly toward the body?
The New Tenant is a mystery and love story by E. Phillips Oppenheim. At its centre stand Helen Thurwell, a squire's bored and clever daughter, and Mr. Bernard Brown, a pale stranger who rents her father's cottage and tells nobody who he is. You get a tale of suspicion that turns into love.
Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you like old-fashioned mysteries with a murder on the moor, a secret tenant, and a heroine who acts for herself.

A stranger rents Falcon's Nest
The story opens on a bright morning at Thurwell Court, a country house near the northern sea. Mr. Thurwell, the squire, breakfasts on a stone terrace with his daughter Helen. She is tired of tennis parties and of the same small circle of neighbours.
The post brings two pieces of news. Sir Geoffrey Kynaston is coming home to Kynaston Towers after almost fifteen years abroad. The second piece is a puzzle. Two men want to rent Falcon's Nest, a strange yellow cottage on the cliff. One is Chapman, whom the squire dislikes. The other is a stranger who signs himself Bernard Brown and names only a bank and a firm of solicitors.
The lawyers will say nothing of his background. Helen says she cannot stand Chapman and will vote for Mr. Brown. A bored vote for a stranger sets the whole story moving.

How it ends (spoiler)
Sir Allan Beaumerville, the polished physician, is the real killer. At his own birthday supper he confesses that he is Bernard Maddison's father, stole a dagger from his son's cabinet and stabbed Sir Geoffrey out of old jealousy. He dies on the spot before the police can seize him. Maddison is freed, and his mother dies in peace in Italy. Helen and Bernard marry and live happily, and he writes again.
