Umowa małżeńska in short

The Marriage Contract follows a gentle man who wants a harbor and a widow who needs a victory. Paul marries into a family whose wealth is partly an illusion, and he wins the first round only because an old notary guards him. The woman he has outwitted does not shout or strike.

What Umowa małżeńska is about

What happens when a wedding is settled by two notaries instead of two hearts? Honoré de Balzac builds a whole novel on that question. The Marriage Contract takes place in Bordeaux in the early 1820s, in a quiet room where a young count, a Spanish widow, her beautiful daughter and two very different lawyers argue over money. Behind the polite smiles, every person hides something, and every clause is a move in a game.

Balzac treats the signing of a contract the way other writers treat a siege, with scouts, reserves, feints and surprise attacks. A bouquet, a white dress with pink ribbons, a sigh at the right moment: each one is a weapon. Under the comedy he asks a graver question. How well can two young people know each other before they bind their lives, when each shows only a sunny face? You meet gentle Paul, proud Madame Evangelista, dazzling Natalie, and the old notary Mathias.

Dla kogo. This book suits readers who love sharp social comedy, schemes in drawing rooms and at dinner tables, and portraits drawn with wit. It will please anyone curious about how money, family pride and love collide when two households become one.

The story in 7 parts

A timid heir decides it is time to marry

Paul de Manerville grows up under a Norman father who turns mean with age. He keeps his only son under strict rule, with old horses, old servants and dull evenings among the faded nobility of Bordeaux. Paul learns fencing, riding and pistol shooting, and he spends the rest of his time reading novels. He never learns to stand up to anyone. Balzac calls him timid in thought and bold in action. He will fight a duel over a glance, yet he trembles at the thought of dismissing a servant.

When the old man dies, Paul is free and rich. He leaves management of his lands to Mathias and spends six years away, serving in Naples, Madrid and London. He spends seven hundred thousand francs and gains what he values more, a knowledge of the world. He becomes elegant, though never quite a man of fashion. He never makes a woman miserable, and he lends money to friends who then forget him. Then he tires of that life and decides to go home, improve his land and marry.

He thinks of marriage as a calm harbor, a place where a heart waits to receive his secrets. He wants to be understood without having to explain himself, and he wants a home where nobody tyrannizes him. This wish grows straight out of the damage of his youth. A man who has never been allowed to resist is easy prey for anyone who offers him warmth.

A man who hopes marriage will rescue him has already given away half his judgment.
