Manchesterczyk in short
The Manchester Man follows one foundling across forty years of a growing city. A baby rescued from the flooded Irk is raised by a tanner and his daughter, named by a rough chaplain, schooled by charity and trained in a warehouse. As he rises, his integrity is tested by a cruel childhood rival, by Peterloo and by a love he cannot say aloud.
What Manchesterczyk is about
What would you do if a cradle with a sleeping baby came floating down a flooded river toward you? In August 1799 the Irk in Manchester bursts its banks, and an old tanner named Simon Clegg runs onto Tanners Bridge with a hook and a pole. He catches the cradle, and a boy with no family is carried to Simon's daughter Bess.
The Manchester Man is a novel by Mrs. G. Linnaeus Banks, published in 1876. She fills it with the real streets, riots and disasters of her own city. It follows that baby, Jabez Clegg, from the flood through a charity school and an apprenticeship. One question runs under every chapter. Who are you when no one knows where you come from?
Dla kogo. Readers who love big historical novels full of real streets and events, warm and quirky side characters, and a hero who rises by honesty.

A tanner pulls a baby from the flood
The story opens in 1799 on the banks of the Irk. Simon Clegg, the oldest man in William Clough's tannery, drags hides from the pits before the water can take them.
Then a shriek goes up from house to house. A painted wooden cradle rides over the mill dam, and inside it a baby sleeps calmly while the water carries him toward ruin. Simon rushes onto Tanners Bridge with a hook and a pole. He catches the wooden hood, and the men lift the cradle onto the footpath. Simon carries the screaming child to his daughter Bess, who quiets him at once.
Mr. Clough offers Simon a crown for the rescue, and Simon refuses it. This refusal gives the novel its first measure of a person, which is what they do when nobody forces them.
Goodness that takes no payment is the root from which the whole story grows.
