Człowiek ze złamanym uchem in short

The novel follows a soldier of Napoleon who is frozen in 1813, dried out by a kindly German scholar, and sold as a curiosity in Berlin in 1859. Léon Renault buys him by mistake and finds that his fiancée Clémentine cannot stop thinking of the sleeper. The colonel is revived with steam and warm baths, and he wakes shouting for his Emperor.

What Człowiek ze złamanym uchem is about

A young engineer comes home from Russia with a fortune, a bride waiting for him, and a souvenir he bought by mistake in Berlin. The souvenir is a dried human body lying in three boxes. On the first night his fiancée kneels beside it and weeps. By August the body is walking, eating, shouting, and claiming her hand.

The Man with the Broken Ear is a comic novel by Edmond About, finished in 1861. He asks a bold question. What if a man could be paused for decades and woken in a changed world? The answer is a funny tale of one of Napoleon's soldiers meeting the Paris of Napoleon's nephew.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy comic fantasy, early science fiction, and Napoleonic lore will love this tale. It suits those drawn to a hero facing a changed world and lively French satire of officials and money-grabbers.

A hero's welcome opens with a kiss gone wrong

On May 18, 1859, Mr. Renault, a retired physics teacher in Fontainebleau, mails a letter to his son Léon in Berlin. It says a new laboratory waits at home and a certain Clémentine is pining for him. Léon has spent three years in the Ural copper mines to earn a fortune worthy of her. A month later he steps off the train into his parents' arms.

The homecoming is warm and comic. Old Gothon, the family servant, weeps on the doorstep, and Mrs. Renault hurries her son to the table. Then Clémentine arrives with her stern aunt. Léon and his fiancée rush to kiss, each aims for the wrong cheek, and both stare at the carpet.

Clémentine is a small, lovely Creole, level-headed, with money of her own. The opening builds a world of order, money, and good manners that the hero will soon smash. A tidy home is the perfect stage for a story about disorder.

Pytania o Człowiek ze złamanym uchem

What is The Man with the Broken Ear about?

It tells of a French colonel from Napoleon's army who is dried out by a scientist in 1813 and brought back to life in 1859. He then tries to win a girl, regain his rank, and understand a changed world.

Who is Colonel Fougas?

Pierre-Victor Fougas is a proud, loud, tender-hearted officer of the 23rd Line Regiment. Napoleon sends him on a mission to Danzig in 1813, and he is captured on the way and sentenced as a spy.

Is the revival of the colonel based on real science?

The book builds on real experiments in which tiny animals such as rotifers dry out and come back to life when wet. The revival of a whole man is imagined by the author for the story.

Why is the book called The Man with the Broken Ear?

Léon accidentally tears a piece from the colonel's ear while showing him off. That scrap is sent to a scientist, who proves the body is alive, and the torn ear becomes a mark of the hero.

Is The Man with the Broken Ear easy to read?

Yes is not needed here: the chapters are short and lively, the narrator jokes with the reader, and scenes of dinners, duels, and chases keep the story moving. The science is explained in plain images such as a watch.
