Lekka księżniczka in short

The Light Princess is the story of a girl whose aunt steals her gravity at her christening. She floats through childhood, laughing at everything and feeling nothing deeply. Her parents quarrel in puns, two philosophers offer useless cures, and only the lake brings her back to herself.

What Lekka księżniczka is about

What happens to a baby who weighs nothing at all? In The Light Princess, she floats up to the ceiling, drifts out of windows on a puff of wind, and becomes the ball in the servants' favorite game.

George MacDonald tells this fairy tale in the voice of a dry, joking storyteller. Behind the puns sits a serious question about what a person loses when nothing ever weighs on her. You will meet two quarrelling philosophers, a wicked aunt, and a prince who finds a swimmer in a dark lake.

Dla kogo. You will love this if you enjoy fairy tales told with a wink, wordplay that makes you grin, and a curse that hides a quiet lesson about love and laughter.

A forgotten sister curses the christening

A king and queen have no children. The king feels unfairly treated and decides to be cross with his wife about it. The queen bears this kindly, and in time she gives him a daughter.

The king writes the christening invitations himself, and he forgets his own sister, Princess Makemnoit. She has been cut from their father's will and lives in an attic. She is sour and spiteful, and she is also a witch, cleverer than any fairy.

Makemnoit goes without an invitation. The king welcomes her warmly, having forgotten that he forgot her. At the font she tosses something into the water, turns three times, and speaks a little rhyme. The child shall be light of spirit and light of body, and she shall never weary human arms but only crush her parents' hearts.

Everyone thinks it is a silly nursery verse. Only the nurse notices that she cannot feel the baby in her arms. When she bounces the child, the baby rises to the ceiling and hangs there, laughing. The queen, who is much cleverer than the king, guesses that the uninvited guest is to blame.

A careless omission grows into a curse, and the fairy tale begins.

How it ends (spoiler)

The golden plate says the lake can be saved only if a man gives his life willingly. The prince offers himself and sits in the hole in the lake bed as the water rises. The princess watches, then saves him when he drowns. She weeps for the first time, finds her gravity, and the lake refills. They marry, and the witch's house collapses on her.
