Wszystko dla pań in short
The Ladies' Paradise is the story of a small, poor girl who walks into the most powerful shop in Paris and slowly changes the man who owns it. Denise Baudu arrives in mourning and finds work, hostility, hunger and a cruel dismissal. Octave Mouret builds an empire on the weakness of his female customers, and the small shops around him fall one by one.
What Wszystko dla pań is about
What happens when a girl from the country steps off a night train in Paris and meets a shop window so full of silk that it seems alive? Denise Baudu is twenty, dressed in black, and holding little Pépé's hand. She stops before The Ladies' Paradise, a draper's store glowing with color, while her uncle's dark cloth shop waits across the street.
Émile Zola wrote this novel in the early 1880s, and set it in the 1860s, when department stores began to swallow the small shops around them. You get a whole business in motion. Octave Mouret, the owner, believes that if he wins the women of Paris he wins the world. Denise is the one person he cannot buy.
Dla kogo. Readers who love nineteenth century Paris, ambition, business and vivid crowds will enjoy this novel, especially those who like a quiet heroine whose gentleness outweighs a rich man's power.

A country girl meets a shop that glows
Denise walks from the Saint-Lazare station with her brothers Jean, who is sixteen, and little Pépé, who is five. Their parents are dead, and their uncle Baudu once promised her a place in his house. At eight in the morning she turns into the Place Gaillon and stops short. A vast, bright draper's shop faces her, with a gilded entrance and the name The Ladies' Paradise.
Silks, satins and velvets shade from deep black to pale pink like a flower bed in bloom. Denise once sold cloaks in Valognes, but she has never seen cloth treated like theater.
Across the street, a stout man with a yellow face watches the children gaze at the windows. He is her uncle, and he hates the shop more than anything in the world. Denise feels a hunger to go inside and a faint fear, as though the lights were stained with blood.
A shop can be a spell, and the display, not only the goods, draws the crowd.
