Innerste in short
The Innerste is a short tale built around a river with a bad name. A son who ran away comes home in 1759, is shaved and scolded into a respectable miller, and marries a cheerful girl. Behind that comfortable picture stand a family belief about a hungry stream, a woman in the Harz who holds a grudge, and a corporal who gives honest advice.
What Innerste is about
What if a river could cry out, and then demand a living thing in payment? In The Innerste, an old miller on its bank hears that cry on a winter night, and his family knows what it asks for. A black hen, thrown into the water with its feet and wings bound, might satisfy the stream. If the river is not fed within a day, it takes a person before the year is out.
Wilhelm Raabe, a German novelist who died in 1910, sets this tale in 1759 and 1760, when French and Hanoverian armies cross the land near Hildesheim. He swears the story is true, then tells it with a smile and a sharp feeling for the dark. You meet a prodigal son, a one-armed corporal, a laughing bride and a red-haired woman in a ruined sawmill.
Dla kogo. You will enjoy this if you like old German tales told with humor and shadow, river legends, and a chatty narrator while dread gathers behind the jokes.

Three rivers and one miller's lost son
The story begins with a joke that turns serious. The narrator says three young ladies lived a hundred and twenty years ago and are still alive. They are the Leine, the Ihme and the Innerste. The Innerste starts as a bright mountain stream in the Harz. Then miners and smelters foul her with ore sand, and by the time she reaches the plain near Sarstedt she is wild and treacherous. Now and then she cries out.
The tale opens in July 1759. Old Miller Christian Bodenhagen stands at his garden fence and stares at bubbles rising in the water. People say they are the breath of water spirits. His only son left home shouting long live Frederick, though he secretly meant to see the world. Rumor says the boy is hanged or living in the Harz with a red-haired miller's daughter called Doris Radebrecker.
Then a voice calls across the water. A ragged man in a blue Prussian coat sits on a willow root and asks whether the fattened calf is ready. It is Albrecht, hungry and sorry. His father greets him with the Spanish cane. After that, Albrecht is shaved, wears a white miller's cap and is promised to Lieschen Papenberg, a cheerful farmer's daughter.
A river with a past, and a son with one, are now side by side.

On Christmas Eve, marauders attack the mill from the willow thicket, led by a woman's ringing cry. Albrecht, Jochen and the mill hands drive them off. Jochen wrestles Doris on the river ice, and is stabbed by her. Then the ice cracks and the Innerste takes her, and her body is found in March. Jochen dies on Christmas morning, calling the river fed. The mill later vanishes, and the regulated Innerste remains dangerous.
