Wzgórze Wenus in short
The Hill of Venus follows Francesco Villani, a courtier who promises his dying father to become a monk. That promise costs him his place at the court of Avellino and the love of Ilaria Caselli. It sends him to Monte Cassino, to the Pope at Viterbo, and then to Naples as an envoy.
What Wzgórze Wenus is about
What would you do if your dying father asked you to give up your whole life to save his soul? In the summer of 1266, a young courtier named Francesco Villani rides through the twilight to a monastery in southern Italy. There his father, Gregorio Villani, Grand Master of the Knights Hospitallers, waits with a single demand. Francesco must become a monk, and he must agree before the night is over.
The Hill of Venus is a medieval romance by Nathan Gallizier. It is set in the last years of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, when Guelphs and Ghibellines fight for Italy and the young king Conradino marches south. You meet a proud girl named Ilaria, a cunning pope, a roaring mercenary duke, and a rival who hides a knife.
Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy medieval Italy, star-crossed lovers, vivid landscapes, pageants and ruins, and a young hero pulled between politics, faith, and passion.

A dying father demands a son's whole life
The story opens at dusk at the monastery of San Cataldo. Francesco arrives in a courtier's clothes and learns that his father lies dying of fever. A cold dread grows in him with every step down the dim corridors.
Gregorio fears Hell, because Francesco was born outside marriage and the Church has refused to forgive that sin. He has decided that a sacrifice is the only cure, and the only person he can claim is his son. Francesco must take the vows and live the life his father failed to live.
Francesco refuses three times. He belongs to the sunlight and the court of Avellino, where a proud girl waits for him. His father answers every objection with the same cry that there is no time. Pity wins, and the young man promises before God to become a monk.
A promise given under pressure still binds the one who gives it.

When is The Hill of Venus set and is it a true story?
It is a novel set in 1266 and 1268, during the fall of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in Italy. Francesco and Ilaria are invented, but Conradino, Charles of Anjou, and Pope Clement IV are real historical figures.
Who is Ilaria Caselli in The Hill of Venus?
Ilaria is a proud, beautiful young woman at the court of Avellino who loves Francesco. She plays Proserpina in a masque and marries Raniero Frangipani, and her choices drive much of the story.
