Golem in short

The Golem follows a gem cutter in old Prague who has lost his past. A stranger gives him a book, and a legend of a clay man starts to look like a map of his own mind. Around him a secondhand dealer hunts a secret love and a dying student plans a patient revenge.

What Golem is about

Imagine falling asleep over a riddle about a stone that looks like a piece of fat, and waking inside another man's life. That is how The Golem begins. A sleeper drifts into the body of Athanasius Pernath, a gem cutter in the Jewish quarter of Prague who cannot remember his own youth.

Gustav Meyrink, an Austrian writer fascinated by mysticism, built this German novel around an old legend of a clay man brought to life by a rabbi. You get a fever dream and a crime tale in one, and a question: who are we when memory goes?

Dla kogo. For readers who love haunted cities, old legends, secret societies and dreams that feel more real than waking. It suits anyone drawn to Prague, Kabbalah and tarot.

The story in 10 parts

A sleeper wakes inside a gem cutter's life

The book opens in moonlight. A restless sleeper has read about the Buddha, and one sentence about a crow and a stone like fat keeps circling in his mind. A stubborn inner voice insists it is the wrong stone. At last his senses slip from his body, and he stands in a gloomy courtyard as someone else.

That someone is Athanasius Pernath, who engraves gems in Hahnpass Lane. He feels he has lived here forever, though he cannot recall arriving. From his window he watches the shop of Aaron Wassertrum, a secondhand dealer with a split lip and round fish eyes.

Then a lady in a gold brocade robe bursts into Pernath's room, begging him to hide her. For one second Wassertrum's face grins through the open door like a mask. The scene plants the trouble that runs through the story, a secret love and a man who hunts it.

The story begins in a borderland where sleep and daily life mix, and every detail may be a clue.

How it ends (spoiler)

Pernath's quest ends in fire. On Christmas Eve his attic rooms on Old School Street burn, and his double appears in a white robe and crown. Climbing down a rope, he sees Hillel and Mirjam through a window, slips, and falls. The narrator wakes in a hotel and learns that the whole story was a dream sparked by a hat he took by mistake. He returns the hat at a garden gate on the Hradčany, where he glimpses Pernath and Mirjam together, alive and young.

Pytania o Golem

What is The Golem by Gustav Meyrink about?

A dreamer slips into the life of Athanasius Pernath, a gem cutter in Prague's Jewish quarter with no memory of his youth. Mysterious visitors, a secret love and a crime plot lead him toward his own hidden past.

Is the Golem in the book a monster?

Not in the usual sense. In the legend a rabbi makes a clay man, but in the novel the Golem is a rumor and a symbol that returns every thirty-three years, tied to the inner life of the ghetto and of Pernath.

Is The Golem a true story and where is it set?

It is a work of fiction, set in the Jewish quarter of Prague. The legend of the clay man, the old ghetto streets and the Old-New Synagogue are real parts of Prague lore that the author weaves into a fantastic tale.

Is The Golem easy to follow?

The story moves through clear scenes, with strong characters, short chapters and a lively mix of crime, ghost tale and tavern humor. Dream passages are vivid and the later chapters pull the threads together.

What is the main message of The Golem?

The book suggests that we find ourselves by meeting the hidden part of ourselves. It also shows how far fate, choice and a hunger for miracles shape a life, and how hatred and love both bind us.
