Złoty skarbiec in short

The Golden Treasury argues by example. Palgrave believed that short songs of one feeling, shaped with care, are the best of English poetry, and he arranged them in four books from Wyat and Shakespeare to Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats. What you keep is a map of English song.

What Złoty skarbiec is about

What do a fairy sleeping in a cowslip's bell, a shepherd begging his love to come away, and a poet calling to a nightingale have in common? They all live in one small, carefully chosen book.

The Golden Treasury was put together by Francis Turner Palgrave and first published in 1861. He gathered the short songs of English into four books, each covering a stretch of time, with a summary for each book and notes at the back. You get three hundred years of English song in one volume, from Shakespeare and Milton to Burns, Wordsworth and Keats.

Dla kogo. This book suits readers who love poems made for reading aloud, songs of love, time, birds and seasons, and anyone who wants one volume that carries the voices of Shakespeare, Milton, Burns, Wordsworth and Keats.

A lyric is one feeling kept whole

Palgrave wanted a small shelf of English songs and short poems that a reader could trust from first line to last. Everything in it is a lyric, meaning a poem built around one feeling or one moment.

That rule explains what is missing. There are no long stories in verse and no plays, only pieces short enough to hold in the mind. He even trims a few poems, dropping a stanza here and there to keep the whole sweet and even.

The poems sit in four books by period. Book One runs from Wyat to Shakespeare and Drummond. Book Two covers the seventeenth century, Book Three the eighteenth, and Book Four the early nineteenth. Numbered notes at the back explain old words such as whist, which means hushed. They read like a friendly guide in a gallery.

Each poem stands alone, so you can take them one at a time and let the whole shape appear.
