Królowie-Duchy in short

The Ghost Kings follows one young woman through tests that grow larger each time. Rachel Dove begins as a missionary's daughter, saved from a flood by a boy she loves at once. She becomes a woman whom whole nations treat as a spirit, and her courage, foresight and kindness make her both loved and feared.

What Królowie-Duchy is about

What does a girl do when a flood wall races down a dry riverbed toward her and a stranger with a gun shouts from the far bank? That is how fifteen-year-old Rachel Dove meets Richard Darrien, a boy who risks his life to save hers. A night in a cave, with lions pacing outside, ties their lives together for good.

H. Rider Haggard wrote The Ghost Kings as a companion to his Zulu novels, drawing on his years in southern Africa. It follows Rachel from the missionary camps of Natal to the court of King Dingaan, where the Zulus take her for a white spirit. You get adventure, prophecy, danger and a love story that crosses rivers and deserts.

Dla kogo. Readers who love old-fashioned adventure, lost worlds, second sight and fate, and who enjoy a brave heroine, a faithful friend, a villain worth hating and a love that survives danger.

The story in 10 parts

A missionary family buries a child in drought

The story opens on the coast of Pondo-land, in the stifling heat before a storm. Rachel Dove, only fifteen, helps her father lay the family's baby in the hard red ground. Her father reads the burial service while two rock rabbits and an old baboon watch.

The Reverend John Dove is a gaunt, saintly man with one aim. He wants to convert the heathen, and he welcomes the thought of martyrdom. His wife Janey, a Scotswoman with second sight, wants only rest. In the tent she tells him that more of them will die, all but Rachel, who was born to live out her life.

Rachel judges them both calmly, with an eye older than her years. She reads the Greek Gospels, speaks Zulu and helps nurse the sick. When her mother asks for fruit, her father sends her alone to the river for Cape gooseberries, trusting God to guard her.

A child raised among prophecy, grief and wild country fears very little and sees very far.
