Rodzina Fairchildów in short

The book follows one family through a run of small crises, each built around a fault. Lucy envies a doll, Henry steals an apple, Emily takes damsons in secret, and all three misbehave when left alone. After each fall there is a confession, a talk with a parent and a prayer.

What Rodzina Fairchildów is about

What happens when three children are left alone for a single day with every good intention? In this book, Lucy, Emily and Henry Fairchild find out. The day ends with a swing, a torn coat and a sister lying on a barn floor with blood on her face.

The Fairchild Family was written by Mary Martha Sherwood, who died in 1851. Many episodes take a fault, such as envy or dishonesty, and show parents answering it with instruction and prayer. You get a close look at a household where love and discipline sit side by side.

Dla kogo. If you enjoy old family stories and quiet scenes of garden, lane and cottage, you will feel at home here. It suits anyone who likes faith woven into daily life.

A May birthday walk shows a home of kindness

The book opens with Mr. and Mrs. Fairchild, who live far from any town in a house with a garden full of fruit and flowers. Two servants, Betty and John, help them. Their three children, Lucy, Emily and Henry, are taught at home.

The children also work. The girls make their beds, polish the chairs and feed the chickens. Henry carries weeds out of the garden in a small basket. The parents pay for a school for poor boys and another for girls in the next village.

On Lucy's birthday in May, the family sets out with a basket of cake for the poor children. They visit the schools, then cross a meadow of primroses to Brookside Cottage, where old Nurse welcomes them. Dinner is spread on the grass. Lucy says that everyone has been kind and everything looks lovely.

A good home teaches by what it does on ordinary days.
