Zaczarowany zamek in short

The Enchanted Castle follows children who make a game of believing in magic, and then find that the game has teeth. A ring that began as a joke makes a girl invisible, wakes paper figures, ages a boy, and turns a girl to stone. Wishes can bring consequences nobody intended, so the children must learn to speak carefully.

What Zaczarowany zamek is about

Imagine blowing toy horns down a dusty country road, hoping a castle will hear you. Then a loose stone in a hedge bank gives way, and behind it lies a garden with a lake, deer, and a maze. That is how The Enchanted Castle begins, with three schoolchildren who decide to believe in magic as hard as they can.

E. Nesbit wrote it in 1907, in a chatty voice that speaks straight to you. Gerald, Kathleen, and Jimmy meet Mabel, and a plain old ring that does exactly what anyone says it does. You get the adventures, the jokes, and the quiet turns, without the last chapters.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy playful fantasy, children who talk like real children, and a narrator who winks at you. It suits anyone who likes secret gardens and wishes that go wrong.

The story in 10 parts

Three bored children walk into a hidden garden

Gerald, Kathleen, and Jimmy cannot go home for the holidays because their cousin has measles. They are sent to Kathleen's empty school, where a French teacher called Mademoiselle lets them spend the next day in the woods.

They take the Salisbury Road and choose turns at random until they are lost. In a hedge Gerald leans on a loose stone and finds a hole in the bank. He strikes a match and crawls in, and the others follow through a cave to a marble terrace above a lake with swans, deer, and white statues. A rose garden, a yew maze, and towers lie beyond.

Here the children split in a way that runs through the whole book. Kathleen and Gerald choose to believe, while Jimmy says magic ended with steam engines and telephones. In the maze a red thread leads them to a lady asleep on a stone bench.

Belief is a choice, and the children make it on purpose.

How it ends (spoiler)

Mademoiselle and the bailiff, who is really Lord Yalding, find each other again, and a last wish by his true love undoes the ring's magic. It becomes a plain gold wedding band that keeps them together. Many secret rooms and statues vanish, but enough jewels remain to restore the castle. Mr. Ugli, who was the Ugly-Wugly, disappears into a heap of clothes. The children stay friends with the new Lord and Lady Yalding.
