Bracia in short
The Brethren follows two English twins who take a lady's life as their charge. Rosamund is also the niece of Saladin, who has dreamed that she will save thousands from slaughter. Hired men take her from Essex, and Godwin and Wulf follow her across the sea, bound by an oath not to let love divide them.
What Bracia is about
Three young people stand on an Essex sea wall in the evening light, and a boat of watchers floats near the river mouth. Within the hour, two cousins will hold a narrow stone quay with their swords while the girl they both love swims a horse across a tidal creek.
The Brethren was written by H. Rider Haggard and dedicated in 1904 to his sister. He took his spark from the Hill of Hattin in Galilee and built a tale of the war between Cross and Crescent, with English knights, the Sultan Saladin and the fearsome Assassins of Masyaf. The twins Godwin and Wulf D'Arcy both love their cousin Rosamund, and they swear an oath that love will not divide them.
Dla kogo. Readers who love swordplay, daring escapes and fast horses will find them here, along with a rich Crusader setting and a warm tale of brotherhood.

A trap springs on the quay at Death Creek
The story opens on the Essex coast, where Rosamund D'Arcy rides home with her cousins, the twins Godwin and Wulf. She is half Syrian through her dead mother, and her eyes light up when the talk turns to the East.
On the way back they find an empty boat tied to an old stone quay. Then masked men with drawn swords leap onto the paths ahead of and behind them. Their leader speaks through an interpreter, who names Hugh Lozelle as the man who wants Rosamund. The brothers may leave alive if they give her up.
Instead Godwin tells Rosamund to spur her grey horse into the water and swim the creek. The twins leap down onto the narrow mole, where only two men can reach them at a time. Then one of the attackers, fallen and presumed dead, rises behind the twins and wounds Godwin. Wulf lifts his brother onto a black horse and charges through the band. The king grants leave to knight both twins for their deed. Courage and loyalty can hold a narrow place against a crowd.
