Czarna sutanna in short

The Black Robe follows a man who kills in a duel and cannot silence the cry that follows him. Romayne is rich, kind, and fragile. Stella offers love and a home, while Father Benwell offers certainty and a place in the Church.

What Czarna sutanna is about

What would you do if one moment of anger left you hearing a voice that no one else can hear? Lewis Romayne, a rich and gifted young Englishman, fires a pistol in a sea fog at Boulogne and spends the rest of the story trying to live with the sound that follows. Around him, a cheerful priest and a loving woman each decide that his troubled soul is theirs to rescue.

The Black Robe is a novel by Wilkie Collins. He uses secret letters, comic dinners and a gambling den to look at the Jesuits, at marriage, and at what guilt does to a conscience.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy Victorian sensation novels will find a haunted hero, a scheming priest, and a devoted heroine here. It suits anyone who likes letters woven into a plot and questions about faith and guilt.

The story in 10 parts

A card table quarrel ends in a fatal duel

The story opens in the voice of Major Hynd, a retired officer who would rather be anywhere but home. His friend Lewis Romayne must fetch his dying aunt, Lady Berrick, from Boulogne, and the Major goes along as his guest.

At Boulogne Romayne meets Captain Peterkin, an old college friend who has fallen on hard times. He accepts a dinner at the man's boarding house, which is really a gambling den. Romayne, warmed by wine, sits down to play at the table of a fat General. He catches the General cheating and calls him a scoundrel. The General spits in his face, and Romayne knocks him flat.

In France that means a challenge, and Romayne will hear no argument. Next morning, in a sea fog, the General's son Maurice, a known marksman, takes his father's place. Both men fire at one signal, and Maurice falls dead.

Then a voice shrieks through the mist, crying out for the assassin. It is the dead man's younger brother, a boy of thirteen, who followed in secret. A moment of pride can bind a good man to a lifelong sorrow.
