Czarna skrzynka in short
The Black Box tells of a famous detective who meets an enemy he cannot find. It begins with a murdered heiress, a stolen necklace and a faithless butler, and it grows into a contest with a figure who sends mocking messages in black boxes. Quest answers with wireless sets, mirrors, hypnosis and explosives, and each answer is met by a stranger trick.
What Czarna skrzynka is about
Twenty-five floors above New York, a young man from the West asks who the quiet fellow dining alone might be. The waiters treat him like a little god, and a millionaire shrinks in his seat. That man is Sanford Quest, and he could end a crook's career if he chose.
The Black Box is a detective thriller by E. Phillips Oppenheim, the English storyteller who wrote many popular mysteries before his death in 1946. It follows Quest through murders and jewel thefts from New York to an English country house and the Egyptian desert. Small black boxes appear along the way, each holding a mocking note signed with two threatening hands.
Dla kogo. Readers who love fast mysteries with gadgets, disguises, chases and cliffhanger chapters will enjoy it. It suits anyone drawn to early New York and master detectives.

A detective whom a whole city fears
The story opens on a rooftop restaurant, and the first scene is all about reputation. A young New Yorker points out stars of the stage and rich men to his country cousin. Then the cousin asks about the man dining alone, and the answer changes the mood of the evening.
Quest is a scientist and a magician, not just a policeman. He keeps a great house with private chemists, telegraph lines and agents in every large city. He takes only the cases he chooses.
Guilty faces turn away, and a woman lowers her veil. Quest does not seem to notice, yet nobody can be sure he has missed them. A hero who seems unbeatable makes an enemy worth fearing.

How it ends (spoiler)
Craig, cornered at last, dies while Quest tries to draw the truth from his mind, and a hidden journal is found. It shows that the real master of the Hands is Professor Ashleigh, whose mind is ruled at times by a brutal, animal self after a bite in South America. Craig had shielded him for ten years. Quest forces the truth from the Professor, who poisons himself with a trick pen. Quest then retires from detective work, and Laura accepts French. He proposes to Lenora and marries her.
