Obrona Sokratesa in short

The Apology is Xenophon's answer to a puzzle. Why did Socrates speak so boldly before the men who held his life in their hands? The answer comes in layers. A blameless life is the best defense.

What Obrona Sokratesa is about

What would you say if a friend urged you to prepare your trial speech, and you answered that you had been preparing it all your life? That is how Socrates replies to his friend Hermogenes in The Apology, written by Xenophon, a soldier, historian and pupil of Socrates.

The scene is Athens, where Socrates faces a charge that can end in death. Others had recorded the lofty tone he took before his judges, but none had shown why. Xenophon fills the gap with the account of Hermogenes, who spoke with Socrates just before the trial. You meet a man just toward people, reverent toward the gods and unafraid.

Dla kogo. This book suits readers who love ancient Greece, courtroom scenes and philosophy told through people rather than theory. It also rewards anyone curious how a person can face a verdict with courage.

Xenophon writes to explain Socrates' bold manner

Xenophon opens by naming a gap. Several writers have described the lofty way Socrates spoke before the Athenian court. Yet none has made clear why he did it.

The missing piece is simple. Socrates had come to see death as better for him than life. Once you know that, the proud speech stops looking like arrogance. Without it, his boldness seems foolhardy.

To fill the gap, Xenophon turns to Hermogenes, who spoke with Socrates in the days before the trial. Xenophon himself was far from Athens at the time, so the work rests on a witness he trusts. He admits that far more was said than he sets down. He wants only the part that explains the man.

Someone who acts in an odd way may be following reasons you have not yet heard. Before you decide that a person is proud or foolish, ask what he knows that you do not.

Ask for the reasons before you judge the manner.

Pytania o Obrona Sokratesa

What is Xenophon's Apology of Socrates about?

It records how Socrates faced his trial in Athens. It gives a private talk with Hermogenes, the answers he gives to charges about the gods and the young, and his calm conduct after the verdict.

Who are Hermogenes, Meletus and Anytus?

Hermogenes is a close companion of Socrates who reports his thoughts before the trial. Meletus is the accuser who brings the charges. Anytus is a man of high honor who is angry with Socrates for what he said about his son.

What is the divine sign of Socrates?

It is an inner voice or warning that Socrates says comes from God and tells him what he ought to do. In this work it stops him twice from preparing a speech for the court.

How does Xenophon's Apology differ from Plato's?

Xenophon writes a short account that explains why Socrates spoke so boldly, using the report of Hermogenes. It focuses on his view that death was better than old age, and gives only a few courtroom exchanges.

What is the main message of the Apology?

The main message is that a person who has lived justly and piously needs no tricks to defend himself. Socrates meets his trial with confidence and meets death with cheerful courage.
