Taida in short

Thais follows a desert abbot who leaves his cell to rescue a dancer in Alexandria, and who comes home with something he did not take with him. The first part shows his journey. The second tells the dancer's life, her fame, and her fear of death, and ends in a banquet, a pyre, and a sealed cell.

What Taida is about

What happens when a holy man sets out to save a woman, and the saving costs him his own peace? In Thais, a monk named Paphnutius leaves the Egyptian desert to rescue a famous actress and courtesan in Alexandria. He believes he acts for God alone.

Anatole France, the French novelist and critic, wrote this short novel in the late nineteenth century. He set it in fourth century Egypt and drew on old legends of desert saints and repentant dancers. He gave them wit, irony, and a deep curiosity about what people really want.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy tales of saints and sinners, sharp talk about faith and doubt, and quiet irony about goodness, desire, and pride.

The story in 10 parts

A holy abbot cannot stop thinking of Thais

In the Thebaid, the desert of Upper Egypt, hermits live in huts along the Nile. They fast, wear hair shirts, and fight demons that come at night in lovely shapes. Paphnutius, Abbot of Antinoe, is the strictest of them all.

Born rich in Alexandria, he lived a loose life until a priest named Macrinus won him to Christ. One day, going over his old sins in prayer, he remembers an actress called Thais. Her face grows clear before him, first a temptress, then a woman weeping in pain. He feels pity, and he decides that he must save her soul.

The old hermit Palemon does not forbid the journey. A plover caught in a net, and a vision of Thais in a shroud, settle the matter. He sets out for Alexandria, finding a blessing in every omen, and that is the first warning the book gives.

A good purpose can hide a need that the good man has not yet named.
