Udar słoneczny i tęsknota za domem in short

Sunstroke follows Asís Taboada through one reckless day at the San Isidro fair and the days after it: shame, denial, a scrubbing bath, Commander Pardo's theories and the steady pull of a charming Andalusian. Homesickness follows Doña Aurora, her son Rogelio and the servant Esclavitud Lamas as love, class and fear of scandal tangle in a single Madrid apartment. You keep a sharp view of how society judges women by appearances, how heat, drink and loneliness loosen reason, and how longing for a place or a person can reshape a life.

What Udar słoneczny i tęsknota za domem is about

A woman wakes in a darkened Madrid bedroom with a headache like a drill, and her maid has a quick explanation: sunstroke. Asís Taboada, a widowed marchioness of thirty-two, nods at once. But a voice inside her refuses the excuse. What did she do the day before?

Sunstroke and Homesickness joins two short novels by Emilia Pardo Bazán, the Galician countess who wrote at the end of the nineteenth century. Both are set in Madrid among people from Galicia. In the first, a lady spends a day at a pilgrimage fair with a charming man from Cádiz. In the second, a mother, her delicate son and a homesick servant share one apartment and one growing worry.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy Spanish fiction with sharp humor, lively street scenes and women who test the rules will find plenty here. It also suits anyone curious about Galicia or the ache of homesickness.

The story in 10 parts

A guilty conscience speaks louder than a headache

Asís wakes with pain drilling through her temples. Her maid, nicknamed the Devil, brings linden tea and a ready explanation. It must be sunstroke, she says, because the day before was hot enough to drop birds from the sky. Asís agrees at once.

Then a second voice speaks inside her, and it will not accept the sun as the culprit. It lists the facts of her life like a lawyer. She is thirty-two, a widow, a loving mother and a careful lady, and still she has done something foolish.

She thinks ahead to her confessor, the stern Jesuit Father Urdax, and wonders how to put this into polite words. She decides to rehearse the whole account in her head, and that rehearsal becomes the story, told by a narrator who winks at us.

The body mends in an hour, but the conscience takes far longer to be satisfied.

What does morriña mean in Homesickness?

Morriña is the Galician word for homesickness. In the story Esclavitud describes it as a bone that falls out of place and drains the spirit, making a person sad, thin and unable to eat.

When was Sunstroke and Homesickness written and is it true to life?

Pardo Bazán wrote both novels in the late nineteenth century. They are fiction, yet they draw on real Madrid places, festivals, customs and the lives of Galician families living far from home.
