Opowieści mórz południowych in short

South Sea Tales is eight adventures that share one sea. A pearl, a whale tooth, a contract, a hurricane, a loaded pistol and a burning ship each set a small person against a larger force, and each tale asks what holds that force in place. The answers are debt, fear, custom and the habit of obeying.

What Opowieści mórz południowych is about

What would you give up for a perfect pearl? In the first story of this book, a diver named Mapuhi asks for no money at all. After the pearl changes hands, the sea itself begins to rise.

South Sea Tales gathers eight stories by Jack London, who sailed the Pacific himself. Under the action runs one question about who holds power in these islands and why people obey.

Dla kogo. Readers who love sea adventures, storms, island trading posts and sharp irony will find a home here, as will anyone curious about the Pacific of a century ago.

A Pearl Sets a Family Dreaming of a House

On Hikueru, a ring of coral only a few feet above the tide, the diver Mapuhi finds a pearl as large as a pigeon's egg. Word travels fast, and every buyer comes.

Mapuhi will not name a price in money. He wants a house with a galvanized iron roof, a porch all around, four bedrooms and a clock on the wall. Raoul, the young supercargo, laughs and offers cash, while Mapuhi and his family shake their heads at once.

The barometer is already falling as they argue. A trader takes the pearl against a debt, and a buyer pays him twenty-five thousand francs for it. When Raoul comes back to accept the house, he is too late. Then great waves roll in without wind, several hundred people crowd onto the highest ground, and the wind tears the island apart. Only three hundred are alive by morning.

London shows how small a treasure looks beside the weather that can erase everyone who wants it. A modest dream can carry a person through ruin.

Pytania o Opowieści mórz południowych

What is South Sea Tales about?

It is a collection of eight adventure stories by Jack London set among Pacific islands. They follow pearl divers, missionaries, traders, labor recruiters, sailors and island governors, and ask who holds power and how people survive storms, debt and danger.

Which stories are in South Sea Tales?

The eight stories are The House of Mapuhi, The Whale Tooth, Mauki, Yah! Yah! Yah!, The Heathen, The Terrible Solomons, The Inevitable White Man and The Seed of McCoy. Each stands alone and can be read in any order.

Who is Otoo in The Heathen?

Otoo is a Bora Bora sailor whom a ship's captain calls a heathen. He shares a hatch cover with the narrator after a hurricane, exchanges names with him and stays at his side for seventeen years as guardian and friend.

Are the stories in South Sea Tales true?

They are fiction, but London drew on his own Pacific voyages and on real settings such as Pitcairn Island, the Paumotus and the Solomons. McCoy's ancestor belongs to the real Bounty mutiny, which gives that tale a historical frame.

Is South Sea Tales easy to follow?

Yes, the tales are short and self-contained, with fast plots, vivid voices and clear refrains. Each story can be read on its own, so you can pick one and enjoy it in a single sitting.
