Nieszczęścia Zosi in short

Sophie's Misfortunes is a string of small disasters that adds up to the portrait of a child learning to behave. Sophie is vain, greedy, quick-tempered and fond of her own ideas. Each chapter gives her one fault and one consequence.

What Nieszczęścia Zosi is about

What happens when a little girl lays her new wax doll in the blazing sun, even though her mother warns her it will melt? Soon the doll's eyes have fallen inside her head. That small disaster opens Sophie's Misfortunes.

The Countess de Ségur wrote these stories for her granddaughter Élisabeth. She says the little girl in them is real, and that this child was quick-tempered, greedy, a liar and a thief before she became gentle and honest. The book has twenty-two short chapters on a country estate in France. You will hear how a lesson is learned, forgotten and learned again.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy short, funny stories about children, lively dialogue, country life in nineteenth-century France, and wise mothers. It suits families who like to read aloud together.

A doll in the sun starts everything

Sophie is not yet four. Her father has sent her a wax doll from Paris, with golden curls, rosy cheeks and bright blue eyes. Sophie kisses the doll more than twenty times.

Her cousin Paul, who is five, fears that Sophie will break her. Sophie answers that she will take such good care of the doll that nothing can happen. This small exchange shows the pair for the whole book. Paul is cautious and sensible, and Sophie is sure of herself.

The next morning her friends are coming to lunch. Sophie decides the doll looks pale and cold, so she lays her on a sunny windowsill. Her mother tells her twice that the heat will soften the wax. Sophie does not believe her. When the friends arrive, the doll is blind, because the wax has melted and the eyes have dropped inside her head.

Madame de Réan sets the eyes back with melted wax. Then Sophie invents a run of cures. She scrubs the colour off the doll's face, burns off her hair with a hot curling iron, and finally drops her from a tree to teach her climbing. The funeral that follows is the merriest anyone has seen.

Ignoring a warning from someone who knows better costs you the thing you love.
