Jeżowce in short

Sea Urchins gathers fifteen short tales of small ships and the people who run them. A person who feels clever sets a trap, whether a pirate story for a boy, a fake quarrel for two wives, a poisoned fish or a magic bird, and the trap springs on the wrong person. Authority at sea is thin, and cooks, crews, wives and children all find ways around it.

What Jeżowce is about

Picture a boy of fourteen at Wapping Old Stairs, a brand-new sea chest on a porter's shoulder, sure that he is about to join a crew of pirates. The skipper has told him so, just to oblige the boy's father. The sailors laugh far too much for desperadoes.

Sea Urchins is a book of fifteen short comic tales by W. W. Jacobs, set among coasting schooners, river barges, quays and taverns. Each plot has a clever person setting a trap, and often the trap swings back on its maker. Start with the boy pirate and the schooner Susan Jane.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy short stories with a quick joke and a neat turn, lovers of harbour talk and old London docks, and anyone who likes comic justice that arrives just when the schemer feels safe.

The story in 10 parts

A pirate-mad boy meets a crew of actors

The first tale, Smoked Skipper, starts at Wapping Old Stairs with a small boy named Ralph. His head is stuffed with penny papers about buccaneers, and his father can no longer manage him.

The skipper of the schooner Susan Jane agrees to take him to sea. He tells Ralph the ship is a pirate vessel, because the boy would never come otherwise. He warns his crew to play along. The sailors tell bloodcurdling tales, but they laugh too much to look like desperadoes.

Ralph's first fight goes badly, and he ends up crying on the cook's knee. At sea he peels potatoes, polishes brass and suffers seasickness, since work is the cure for piratical yearnings. The mate finds the penny papers; later they are locked away.

At anchor, Ralph speaks with perfect respect. A boy who seems beaten may simply be waiting for his moment.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Ralph A fourteen-year-old boy full of penny dreadfuls who is tricked into thinking the Susan Jane is a pirate ship and has plans of his own.
  • Kate Boom A sharp young woman whose father schemes to marry her off, and who watches every move and plays her own game.
  • Mr. Boom A retired merchant sailor who tries to arrange his daughter's future with a tobacco pouch and an old friend's help.
  • Captain Bunnett The skipper of the Foam, caught between his wife and the mate's wife and desperate for a peaceful voyage.
  • Captain Fazackerly An honest old skipper of the Sarah Ann who is asked for a disbursement sheet and takes advice from a friend.
  • Captain Tweedie A confident barque master who drafts a grand expense sheet for his friend and enjoys every item.
  • Mrs. Gannett A calm, sleepy-looking wife whose jealous husband gives her a parrot, and who has her own ideas about the bird.
  • Jenny Evans The biggest of three young women taken to sea on the Harebell, and the leader of the mop campaign against the skipper.

How it ends (spoiler)

The endings reverse each plan. Ralph's note leaves the crew bailing out the Susan Jane for a tin of corned beef. Kate tells Tarrell her engagement was a joke and he stays to be reminded of his foolishness. Mrs. Gannett's invented parrot stories send her husband into silence and a worry about Jenkins. In The Lost Ship, the old woman climbs the stairs at dawn and cannot wake her son, who has died quietly in his bed.

Pytania o Jeżowce

What is Sea Urchins about?

Sea Urchins is a collection of fifteen short comic stories by W. W. Jacobs about skippers, mates, cooks, wives and sailors on small ships and in harbor towns, with clever tricks that often backfire on the schemer.

Who wrote Sea Urchins and when?

W. W. Jacobs wrote it. He died in 1943. The last tale in the book carries the date January 1899, and its opening places the ship's departure early in the nineteenth century.

Is Sea Urchins easy to read?

Yes, in the best sense. The stories are short, and most use lively dialogue and clear scenes for comedy, though the collection also includes more serious tales. You can read one tale at a time and enjoy it on its own.

Are all the stories in Sea Urchins comedies?

Most are comic, built on schemes, mistakes and clever reversals. An Intervention and The Lost Ship have a more serious mood, and they add range and quiet feeling to the collection.

What is the main message of Sea Urchins?

The tales suggest that pride and cunning rarely go as planned, that people in charge depend on those below them, and that anyone who sets a trap should watch for the moment it swings back.
