Sanditon in short

Sanditon follows a young woman from a quiet country home as she arrives at a seaside town that exists mainly in the hopes of its owners. Mr Parker wants it to grow, Lady Denham wants it to pay, and a crowd of visitors and hangers-on want a share. Austen shows invalids who enjoy their illnesses, a baronet who plans a seduction from his reading, and a great lady whose money makes everyone bow.

What Sanditon is about

A carriage tips over on a rough Sussex lane, and the man who climbs out is delighted. His ankle is sprained, yet he sees luck in the spot, because he believes a surgeon lives close by. How would you feel if a stranger turned your worst afternoon into a sales pitch?

This is Sanditon, the last novel Jane Austen began. She wrote it in 1817, the year she died, and it stops after twelve chapters. Even so, it holds a whole world of half built terraces, a rich old widow, a baronet who learned love from novels, and a family of invalids. You get Austen's wit turned on money, fashion, health and the selling of the sea.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy sharp social comedy, lively talkers and gentle mockery of fashion will feel at home here. It suits anyone curious about how money, health and manners tangle together.

A wrong turn brings Mr Parker and Charlotte together

The story opens with an accident. A gentleman and his wife leave the main road for a rough lane and tip over on the climb. He sprains his ankle, yet he smiles and calls the spot a lucky one.

Help comes from the only gentleman's house on the lane. Its owner, Mr Heywood, offers kindness at once. The traveller asks for a surgeon, and Mr Heywood says there is none in the parish. The traveller pulls out two newspaper cuttings that advertise a medical partnership in Willingden. Mr Heywood solves the puzzle with a smile. There are two Willingdens, and the advertisement means the one seven miles away.

The traveller is Mr Parker of Sanditon, and the mistake shows his nature. He read the notices in a rush and never checked. Within minutes he is praising Sanditon's breeze and hard sand while running down a rival hamlet called Brinshore. Mr Heywood thinks new resorts raise prices and spoil the poor. The narrator calls Sanditon Mr Parker's mine, his lottery and his hobbyhorse.

The Parkers stay a fortnight while the ankle mends. The Heywoods have fourteen children, and they let Charlotte, the eldest daughter still at home, go with the Parkers to see the world.

A misread advertisement brings an enthusiast and a clear-eyed guest together.

How it ends (spoiler)

The writing breaks off in Chapter 12 while Charlotte and Mrs Parker wait in Lady Denham's sitting room at Sanditon House, looking at the portraits of Sir Harry and Mr Hollis. Austen never finished the book, so no courtship is settled, and the fates of Clara, Sir Edward, Sidney Parker and the resort itself are left open.

Pytania o Sanditon

What is Sanditon about?

Sanditon follows Charlotte Heywood, who visits a new Sussex seaside resort with Mr and Mrs Parker. She meets a rich widow, a baronet with fancy ideas, and a family of invalids, and she watches how money and fashion shape their behaviour.

Did Jane Austen finish Sanditon?

No. Austen wrote it in 1817, the year she died, and the text stops after twelve chapters. What she completed gives a full set of characters, settings and comic situations, so the pages that exist can be read and enjoyed on their own.

Who is Lady Denham in Sanditon?

Lady Denham is the rich, blunt widow who owns much of Sanditon and is Mr Parker's partner in developing it. Her relations, her first husband's heirs and the Denham family all court her hoping to inherit her fortune.

Why are the Parker sisters always ill in Sanditon?

Diana and Susan Parker believe they are chronic invalids and try every cure, from leeches to pulled teeth. Charlotte and the narrator suggest that imagination and a love of attention play a large part, which gives the book much of its comedy.

Is Sanditon easy to read for a first Austen novel?

Its short chapters, clear scenes and lively talkers make it approachable. Each chapter centres on a conversation or a visit, and the humour comes from people's own words, so it works well for readers meeting Austen for the first time.
