Robur Zdobywca in short

Robur the Conqueror is the story of a quarrel carried to the sky. A club of balloonists in Philadelphia is challenged by Robur, an engineer who says the future belongs to flying machines. He seizes the club's president, its secretary and a timid valet, and shows them the world from the Albatross.

What Robur Zdobywca is about

What would you do if the sky itself began to play a trumpet? In the spring when this story opens, observatories on three continents hear strange notes and see lights that move faster than any train. Then flags with a golden sun appear on towers from Paris to Canton. Nobody can say who put them there.

Robur the Conqueror is a novel by Jules Verne, written when inventors argued over how people would one day fly. You get a quarrelsome club in Philadelphia, a stranger who says its members are wrong, and a flying ship called the Albatross that carries two of them around the globe against their will. Under the fun sits a sharper question. Does being right give a man the right to force others to see it?

Dla kogo. This book is for readers who love old-fashioned adventure, marvelous machines and journeys across the whole map. It also rewards anyone who enjoys comic quarrels.

The story in 10 parts

A Mystery in the Sky Puzzles Everyone

The book opens with two gentlemen firing pistols at each other near Niagara Falls. Their quarrel is about a tune. One says the notes from the sky were Rule Britannia, and the other says Yankee Doodle.

The joke shows how nervous the world has become. For a month, a sound like a trumpet and a flash of light have appeared over America, then Europe, then Asia. Verne tours the observatories, and each answers in its own style. Paris admits that every section knows nothing. Greenwich and Oxford agree only that it is an illusion.

The director of a Chinese observatory says it may be a bird shaped flying machine, and the world laughs at him. Then, in one week in June, people on the highest points on earth all see the same flag, black with stars and a golden sun. Someone clever is playing with the planet.

When a fact does not fit what experts expect, they argue first and look second.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Robur A brilliant, fearless engineer who built the Albatross and wants the world to admit that heavier than air flight is the future.
  • Uncle Prudent The hot tempered, wealthy president of the Weldon Institute, who believes in balloons and wants revenge on Robur.
  • Phil Evans The cool, rich secretary of the club, Prudent's old rival, who joins him against Robur and keeps looking for a chance to escape.
  • Frycollin Prudent's timid, hungry valet, who is terrified of heights and only wants to stand on solid ground again.
  • Tom Turner Robur's loyal mate, a stout Englishman who plays the trumpet and fires the harpoon and the gun.
  • Francois Tapage The French cook of the Albatross, probably a Gascon, who teases Frycollin and prepares meals for the crew.
  • Jem Chip The Weldon Institute's vegetarian treasurer, who doubts Robur's claim loudly from his seat at the meeting.

How it ends (spoiler)

The Albatross is destroyed in midair by Prudent's hidden bomb after the two escape. Robur and his crew survive, are rescued, and rebuild the ship. Months later, as the Go-Ahead rises over Philadelphia, the new Albatross appears and saves the balloon's crew from a fall. Robur frees them, says the world is not ready for his secret, and flies away. The humbled club is mocked, and Verne says the sky belongs to the Albatross.

Pytania o Robur Zdobywca

What is Robur the Conqueror about?

It tells of an engineer who flies a machine heavier than air, the Albatross, and carries two stubborn balloonists around the world to prove his point. It mixes comedy, travel and the debate over how people will fly.

Who is Robur in Robur the Conqueror?

Robur is a forty year old engineer of unknown nationality who speaks English fluently. He has built a flying ship, the Albatross, lifted by seventy four screws, and he is sure that balloons are a dead end.

What is the Albatross in the book?

The Albatross is Robur's airship, a deck one hundred feet long carried by seventy four lifting screws and driven by two propellers. It runs on electricity, is made of pressed paper, and can fly about one hundred and twenty miles an hour.

Is Robur the Conqueror a true story?

No, it is a novel by Jules Verne from the late nineteenth century. Flight by heavier than air machines was then a debated idea, and Verne uses real inventors, places and facts to make the adventure feel close to life.

Is Robur the Conqueror a sequel to anything?

It stands on its own. It is part of Verne's Extraordinary Voyages series, but you can enjoy it without any other book, and its clear plot follows one voyage from Philadelphia around the world.
