Dojrzewające ziarno in short

Ripening Seed follows one summer in Brittany in which a boy and a girl who have grown up side by side find that their friendship is turning into something else. Philippe fears waiting and longs to be a man. Vinca is steady, practical and fierce in her devotion.

What Dojrzewające ziarno is about

Two young people lean over a rock pool in Brittany, waiting for one shrimp to swim into a net. Her arm rests in his hand. They keep talking about the shrimp while her arm rests in his hand. What happens when a friendship that has lasted since the cradle suddenly feels like something else?

Ripening Seed is a short novel by Colette, first published in 1923. It follows one summer on the Breton coast, where two families rent the same villa every year. Philippe is sixteen and a half. Vinca is nearly sixteen. Colette writes about them with close attention to the sea, the body and the sudden moods of that age, and she never talks down to them.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy short novels about first love, summer by the sea, vivid nature writing, and young characters whose feelings shift from one hour to the next.

The story in 8 parts

A shrimp pool brings an old friendship to its edge

The novel opens with two landing nets and a girl in a patched sweater. Vinca goes fishing like a boy, in salt-stiff espadrilles and a bristly beret. Philippe watches her from a dune and compares this year's Vinca with the Vinca of earlier summers.

The two families rent a villa on the Breton coast every year. Childhood has joined the young pair, and adolescence is now pulling them apart. They trade sharp remarks and fall into long sulks. Philippe hides behind a pose of mystery. Vinca only keeps quiet and fears that one year he will stop coming back.

Then comes the shrimp pool. Philippe holds his net perfectly still while she leans close. Her hair brushes his cheek. Her arm slides into his half-closed hand like a bracelet, and she lets it stay there. Philippe lets the best shrimp escape, because he is enjoying the stillness of her arm too much to lift the net.

Their talk stays focused on fishing, and yet everything has moved. A game they have played for years now carries a different weight. A change in love often begins as a change in touch, long before anyone finds the words.

The first sign that childhood is ending is a familiar game that no longer feels simple.

How it ends (spoiler)

Philippe and Vinca spend a night together in the vegetable garden, among threshed buckwheat, and it ends their childhood. Philippe wakes full of guilt and disappointment. He hides in the hedge and watches Vinca at her window. She waters her fuchsia and hums a little song, appearing unharmed and cheerful. He feels small, neither hero nor villain, only a boy who has given her a little pain and a little pleasure.
