Rip Van Winkle in short

Rip Van Winkle is the story of an easygoing man in a Dutch village at the foot of the Kaatskill Mountains. Children and neighbors love him, his wife scolds him, and he is driven again and again toward the hills. One autumn evening a stranger asks for help with a keg, and Rip follows him into a hollow where silent figures play ninepins.

What Rip Van Winkle is about

What would you do if you lay down for a nap on a mountainside and woke to find your beard a foot long, your dog gone, and strangers staring at you in a village you thought you knew? That is the plight of Rip Van Winkle, a gentle man from a small Dutch village at the foot of the Kaatskill Mountains. He loves children, fishing and rambles with his gun. He hates only work on his own farm.

Washington Irving tells the tale through an invented storyteller, the old New Yorker Diedrich Knickerbocker. You get a comic marriage, a ghostly game and a country that changes its flag.

Dla kogo. This tale suits readers who enjoy gentle humor, folk legends and stories rooted in a real place. It will please anyone curious about early America or the old idea of a sleeper who wakes to a different world.

The story in 7 parts

Rip is a kind man who avoids work

Irving begins with the mountains, not the man. The Kaatskills rise west of the Hudson River, and they change color with every season and every hour. Village wives treat them as barometers. The whole tale will turn on what happens among their cliffs.

At their foot lies a small, very old village founded by Dutch colonists. The time is many years before the American Revolution, when the country is still a province of Great Britain. In one weather-beaten house lives Rip Van Winkle.

Rip is simple, good-natured, a kind neighbor and an obedient, henpecked husband. The village wives take his side in every family quarrel. The children shout with joy when he appears. He makes their toys, teaches them to fly kites, and tells them stories of ghosts and witches. Not a dog in the neighborhood will bark at him.

His one great flaw is a horror of profitable work, and it is not plain laziness. Rip will sit on a wet rock all day with a fishing rod and never complain about an empty line. He helps any neighbor with husking corn or building a fence. He is ready to look after anyone's business but his own. His fences fall, his cow strays into the cabbages, and his land shrinks acre by acre.

We forgive a man's faults quickly when his kindness to everyone else is plain.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Rip Van Winkle A kind, easygoing villager who helps everyone but himself and wants only to fish, hunt and wander in peace.
  • Dame Van Winkle Rip's sharp-tongued wife, who wants him to mend the farm and care for his family.
  • Wolf Rip's loyal, henpecked dog, his only ally at home and his companion on every ramble.
  • Nicholas Vedder The innkeeper and village patriarch who rules the bench club with his pipe smoke and rarely speaks.
  • Derrick Van Bummel The neat, learned schoolmaster who reads old newspapers aloud to the idlers at the inn.
  • The stranger with the keg A short old man in old Dutch clothes who carries a keg up the mountain and asks Rip for help.

How it ends (spoiler)

Rip has slept for twenty years. His wife is dead, and his grown daughter Judith Gardenier takes him in. Old Peter Vanderdonk confirms his story, saying that Hendrick Hudson and his crew watch the mountains every twenty years and play ninepins there. Rip settles on the inn bench as a village patriarch, tells his tale to every stranger, and enjoys a life free of Dame Van Winkle. Neighbors still blame summer thunder on the ninepins, and henpecked husbands wish for a drink from his flask.

Pytania o Rip Van Winkle

What is Rip Van Winkle about?

It tells of a good-natured Dutch villager in the Kaatskill Mountains who avoids work, is scolded by his wife, and meets strange silent men on a mountain, with consequences for how he sees his village and himself.

Who is Diedrich Knickerbocker in Rip Van Winkle?

He is an invented old gentleman historian of Dutch New York. Irving says the tale comes from his papers, which lets him tell it in a mock-scholarly voice with a straight face and plenty of humor.

Is Rip Van Winkle a true story?

No, it is fiction drawn from folk legend and written in the early nineteenth century. Irving sets it in a real region, the Catskill Mountains of the Hudson Valley, and the narrator insists it is true as part of the joke.

Is Rip Van Winkle easy to read?

The tale is short and told in a lively comic voice, with clear scenes and plain action. It moves quickly from the village to the mountain and back, and it can be read in a single sitting.

What is the main message of Rip Van Winkle?

Irving offers no single lesson. The tale smiles at idleness and at busyness alike, and it shows a quiet colonial village giving way to a restless new nation while asking what a person keeps when the world changes.
