Refleksje o wojnie i śmierci in short

Freud's essay moves in two steps. First, he shows why the shock of the war should surprise less. Educated Europeans believed that great nations shared a civilization and would keep to the rules they taught their own citizens.

What Refleksje o wojnie i śmierci is about

What if the shock of war was never about the war alone? In 1915, in the first year of the Great War, Sigmund Freud sat in Vienna, nearly sixty, with his sons at the front.

He wrote Reflections on War and Death for the people left at home, who felt lost and could not make sense of what they felt. The essay has two parts, one on the disappointment the war caused and one on a changed way of facing death. Both, he says, rest on illusions about human nature.

Dla kogo. This is for readers who like big questions about human nature, who wonder why decent people turn cruel in a crisis, and why death is so seldom spoken of.

War destroys the dream of a shared civilization

Freud begins in the confusion of the first months of the war. Nobody at home has reliable news, and even scientists have turned into partisans. He names two sources of their distress: disappointment and a changed attitude toward death.

The disappointment is easy to picture. Before the war, educated Europeans lived as citizens of a larger homeland. Each person loved favorite thinkers and artists from many nations, and felt no betrayal of his own country in doing so.

People pictured any future war as a chivalrous contest that would spare the wounded, doctors, civilians, women and children. The real war ignores all of that. It is bloodier than any before it, and it disregards the laws of nations. Nations that thought they knew one another turn out to hate each other with a hatred that shocks even those who share their culture.

Freud does not stop at mourning. He says the disappointment rests on an illusion, and the task is to understand why it was false.

An illusion that breaks is a loss, but it is also a chance to see people as they are.

Pytania o Refleksje o wojnie i śmierci

What is Reflections on War and Death about?

It looks at two troubles of wartime. One is the disappointment people feel at the cruelty of civilized nations. The other is the way war breaks our habit of hiding death from ourselves. Freud explains both through psychoanalysis.

What does Freud mean by regression in this essay?

Regression is a return of the mind to an earlier stage of development. Freud says earlier stages are never lost, so under strain, such as war, or in sleep, people can fall back on older and more primitive ways of feeling.

Why does Freud say we do not believe in our own death?

He says we cannot picture ourselves dead, because we always remain as a watching spectator. For that reason he claims the unconscious feels immortal, even though we know in principle that everyone must die.

When was Reflections on War and Death written and what prompted it?

Freud wrote it during the first period of the Great War, when Europe's nations turned on one another. The essay responds to that conflict, drawing also on his earlier work, such as Totem and Taboo from 1913.

What is the main message of Freud's essay?

People are less moral than civilization pretends, and honesty about this helps. By admitting our aggressive impulses and giving death its proper place in thought, Freud argues, we make life more bearable and more truthful.
