Redburn. Jego pierwsza podróż in short

Redburn is a young man's voyage in four stages. A boy raised on pictures and ship advertisements leaves a village on the Hudson, signs on a ship for Liverpool, and is mocked from the first hour. At sea he is bullied and hungry, yet he learns to climb the rigging and to see the people around him.

What Redburn. Jego pierwsza podróż is about

What does a boy expect from the sea? Wellingborough Redburn expects glory.

Then he steps aboard in a borrowed shooting jacket, and the first order he gets is to clean out a pigpen. Redburn. His First Voyage is a novel by Herman Melville, published in 1849, drawn from his own young years as a merchant sailor. The older Redburn looks back with humor and tenderness at the boy he was.

Dla kogo. Readers who love sea stories, coming-of-age tales and sharp humor will enjoy this book, as will anyone curious about life aboard a merchant ship and how a proud boy meets the real world.

The story in 11 parts

Sea dreams grow from newspapers and a glass ship

Redburn's wish to go to sea grows from childhood memories and dreams of foreign places. He grows up in a village on the Hudson River, short of money after his father's bankruptcy and death. He longs to be a traveler whom people stare at in the street.

He reads old newspapers for the ship advertisements. A coppered brig bound for Bremen seems to him a poem, and every word suggests silks and sunburned captains. His father told of towering waves, and French engravings of warships hang in the dining room.

The strongest spell is a glass ship called La Reine, kept under a glass case in the sitting room.

The older narrator smiles at the boy while still loving him. A dream built from pictures leaves no room for hunger, cold or insult. Dreams of adventure are made from pictures, and the real voyage tests them.

Pytania o Redburn. Jego pierwsza podróż

What is Redburn by Herman Melville about?

A poor, sheltered boy named Wellingborough Redburn ships as a sailor from New York to Liverpool and back. He faces bullying shipmates, a false captain, the poverty of Liverpool, a strange trip to London, and a crowded emigrant crossing.

Is Redburn based on a true story?

It is a novel, but Melville drew on his own experience. As a young man he sailed on a merchant ship to Liverpool, and many scenes and impressions come from that voyage, though the characters and events are shaped as fiction.

Who is Jackson in Redburn?

Jackson is a thin, yellow, coughing sailor in the forecastle who rules the crew by fear. He boasts of slave ships and plague ports, and Redburn both fears and pities him as a bitter, wasted man.

Why does Redburn carry his father's guidebook?

The old green guidebook, The Picture of Liverpool, was used by his father on a visit years before. Redburn trusts it to lead him around the city, and finds it far out of date, which teaches him that the world keeps changing.

What is the main message of Redburn?

The book shows a boy losing his dreams and gaining sympathy. Class, money and charm shape how people treat each other, and a young man learns to look at poverty, power and friendship with open eyes.
