Czerwona Ewa in short

Red Eve follows a girl who will not be sold and a merchant's son who will not give her up. Their feud with the Claverings and the French lord Acour carries them from a frozen Suffolk marsh to the court of Edward the Third, the field of Crecy, a duel in Venice and a plague-struck Avignon. All the while a figure in a red cap from the East shadows their path.

What Czerwona Ewa is about

What would you do if a girl in a red cloak asked you to meet her on a frozen marsh to say farewell? For Hugh de Cressi, a merchant's youngest son in Suffolk in 1346, it is the first move in a game of love, feud and war. Far away, in the same hour, a red-cloaked figure called Murgh sails west from a plague-stricken Eastern city.

Red Eve was written by H. Rider Haggard, who loved the Suffolk shore where the sea has eaten the old town of Dunwich. It is a medieval adventure with archers, knights and a great battlefield, and a ghost story about the Black Death. You meet Eve Clavering, who will not be sold, and Grey Dick, an archer who never misses.

Dla kogo. This is for readers who love swashbuckling romance, medieval England and loyal friendship. Duels, an archery contest, a famous battle and a villain to cheer against are all here.

Two Cousins, One Feud and a Fatal Duel

The book opens in the East, in a vast city half buried in snow, where the dead burn in the temple squares. A burly man in a red cloak walks to the river and boards a ship with crimson sails. He is Murgh, and he promises the city that he will come again.

On the same day, in February 1346, Eve Clavering, tall, dark and always dressed in red, calls her cousin Hugh de Cressi to the frozen Blythburgh marshes to say farewell. His gaunt archer Grey Dick keeps watch among the willows. The Claverings hold the land and the de Cressis hold the gold, and their feud is three generations old.

Eve's father has promised her to a rich French lord, Sir Edmund Acour. She will not go. She and Hugh swear their love and plan to flee to Sir Andrew Arnold, an old priest at Dunwich. Then Dick's peewit call warns them that armed men are riding down on them.

Her brother John sets the reeds on fire and strikes Hugh in the face by the river. In the duel that follows, Hugh spares John once, and when John will not yield, he kills him. Hugh and Eve swim the icy Blythe while Dick holds the bank. One fair fight has turned an old quarrel into a blood feud.

On the Blythburgh marsh, Murgh waits with Hugh and Dick, and Eve arrives with the wounded Sir Andrew. Acour, who has hunted them from Avignon, is made to face Hugh in the dawn. Hugh wounds him badly and then spares him. Acour hurls a dagger at Eve, misses, and falls backward onto his own sword in the grave Dick has dug. Dying, Andrew marries Hugh and Eve beside the grave, and Murgh calls him home. Hugh and Eve walk away together, and Dick buries both the dead.

Pytania o Czerwona Ewa

What is Red Eve about?

It follows Hugh de Cressi and Eve Clavering in fourteenth-century Suffolk as their love defies a family feud and a treacherous French lord. Their path crosses the battle of Crecy, Venice and the Black Death, with a mysterious figure called Murgh moving behind events.

Who is Murgh in Red Eve?

Murgh is an Eastern figure in a red and yellow cap who walks with the plague. He calls himself the Gateway of the Gods, a messenger of death serving a higher Master, and he helps those who have shown him kindness.

Is Red Eve a true story?

No, it is an invented tale set against real history. Crecy, King Edward the Third and the Black Death are real, while Hugh, Eve, Dick and Murgh are creations of Haggard, who dedicated the book in 1911.

Why is Eve Clavering called Red Eve?

She likes to wear red clothes, and Hugh describes her hair and eyes as black as ash buds. People throughout the Suffolk countryside know her by the name, and the colour keeps returning as a sign of fire, blood and her fierce spirit.

Who is Grey Dick in Red Eve?

Grey Dick is Hugh's loyal archer, pale and gaunt, with a black bow that came from the sea. He is the best shot in England and speaks bluntly to kings, and he follows Hugh into every danger.
