Profesor Unrat in short

Professor Raat, nicknamed Filth, rules a classroom by fear until a pupil's poem about a cabaret singer sends him into a harbor tavern. There he meets Rosa Fröhlich, who treats him as a man for the first time. His old hunt for pupils becomes a private war for her honor.

What Profesor Unrat is about

Why would a respected teacher of ancient Greek end up lacing a cabaret singer's corset, pouring champagne for his own pupils, and running the wildest house in town? Heinrich Mann asks that question in Professor Filth, a German novel first published in 1905, and he answers it with comedy that slowly turns dark.

Raat teaches the lower sixth form at a town Gymnasium. For twenty-six years his pupils have twisted his name into Unrat, the word for filth. Chasing a pupil's poem, he walks into the Blue Angel tavern, where the singer Rosa Fröhlich performs. Mann wrote a satire of rigid schooling and small-town respectability, and the book later gave the film The Blue Angel its story.

Dla kogo. This is for readers who enjoy sharp satire, strange love stories, and portraits of obsession. It suits anyone curious about school life, small-town scandal, and the way people remake one another.

The story in 10 parts

A teacher called Filth rules by fear

Professor Raat has taught in the same school for twenty-six years. His pupils have twisted his name into Unrat, meaning filth, and the whole town knows it. He treats every shouted insult as a crime that must be proved. He can prove nothing, so he memorizes faces and waits.

One foggy morning, a heavy country boy, Count von Ertzum, bellows the hated word from a window. Raat takes the stairs in five bounds and sends the boy to the dark cloakroom he calls the hole. Then he sets a trick essay topic and rejoices as the class falls apart. Lohmann, a pale pupil who writes poems, cannot stand it. He rises and says that it smells of filth, and Raat drags him out too.

Mann shows a man who has lived only among schoolboys and sees all of life as a school. Such a man is strong inside his walls and helpless outside them. A tyrant who lives on obedience is ruled by his fear of a single word.

Pytania o Profesor Unrat

What is Professor Filth about?

It follows a strict schoolmaster nicknamed Unrat, or Filth. While hunting a pupil who wrote a poem about a cabaret singer, he meets her, falls under her spell, and slowly loses his post, his savings, and his old sense of himself.

Why is he called Unrat or Filth?

His pupils turn his real name, Raat, into Unrat, the German word for filth. The nickname has followed him for twenty-six years, and the story shows how much a single word can hurt, rule, and finally belong to him.

Is Professor Filth the story behind the film The Blue Angel?

Yes. The novel, published in 1905, gave the film The Blue Angel its plot of a teacher and a cabaret singer. The book is wider and darker, with more about the town, the pupils, and the tyrant's mind.

Who are the main characters?

Professor Raat, the singer Rosa Fröhlich, and three pupils: the poet Lohmann, the nobleman's son von Ertzum, and the sly Kieselack. Rosa's colleagues Kiepert and Guste also play a part, as do townspeople such as the consul Breetpoot.

Is it easy to follow?

Yes, because it moves in short, vivid scenes, each with a clear aim. The comedy of the classroom and the cabaret carries you along, and repeated phrases and recurring songs help you keep track of where you are.
