Persuasion in short
Persuasion follows Anne Elliot, who gave up the man she loved on the advice of a trusted friend. Eight years later, her family's debts bring him back, now a rich naval captain who has not forgiven her. Through Somerset, Lyme, and Bath, they meet again as near strangers while vain relatives and a smooth cousin press their claims.
What Persuasion is about
What happens when the man you refused at nineteen walks back into your life, richer and more admired than ever? That is the problem facing Anne Elliot, a quiet woman of twenty-seven who is useful to everyone and noticed by almost no one. Eight years ago she was persuaded to end her engagement to a young naval officer with no money. Now her vain father must rent out the family estate, and the new tenants are the officer's sister and her husband.
Persuasion is the last novel Jane Austen completed, published after her death in 1817. It has the sharp social comedy of her earlier books, but its mood is gentler and more autumnal. You get the story in order, with proud relatives, loyal friends, a warm navy, and what the book says about advice, rank, and worth.
Dla kogo. This book will suit you if you enjoy a love story with grown-up feelings, sharp social comedy about families, vanity, and money, and a heroine who is observant, kind, and quietly brave.

Vanity drains the Elliot fortune and forces a move
Sir Walter Elliot of Kellynch Hall has one book he reads for pleasure, the Baronetage, a list of titled families. He reads his own entry again and again, and he has even added the date of his wife's death in his own hand. He prizes his looks and his rank above everything, and his spending has brought him into debt.
His eldest daughter Elizabeth is as proud as he is, and she runs the house. Anne counts for nothing with either of them. Lady Russell, a close friend of the late Lady Elliot, draws up careful budgets and, unlike everyone else, asks Anne for her opinion. Anne wants the strictest cuts, but her father rejects every plan that touches his comfort.
So the estate is to be rented out, and the family will go to Bath. The tenant is a rich naval man, Admiral Croft, whom Sir Walter accepts because the rank sounds well. His wife is the sister of a naval officer named Wentworth. The name makes Anne leave the room to hide her face. A household run on vanity cannot last, and the overlooked child is the first to see it.
