Pepita Jiménez in short

Pepita Jiménez follows a young seminarian who comes home for a visit and falls in love with the widow his father is courting. Told through his own letters and then a plain narrator, it shows a sincere mind misreading itself. He believes his calling is pure, yet pride and a wish to stay consistent are woven into it.

What Pepita Jiménez is about

What happens when a young man sure of his calling goes home for a short visit and meets a woman whose gaze no book has prepared him for? That is the start of Pepita Jiménez. Luis de Vargas is twenty-two, raised by his uncle the dean, and weeks away from becoming a priest. His father, Don Pedro, keeps him in an Andalusian town and is courting a rich young widow named Pepita.

Juan Valera, a Spanish writer and diplomat, wrote the novel in the nineteenth century. You get a love story told from inside a restless mind, with orchards, card games and a gentle joke about pride hiding inside piety.

Dla kogo. This book is for readers who love a love story told through letters, enjoy sunny Andalusian settings, and like to watch a sincere young mind argue with its own heart.

The story in 11 parts

A bundle of papers frames the story

The novel opens with an editor who says a dead cathedral dean's bundle of papers reached him through several hands. He decides the letters are copies of real ones, and that the dean added a single narrative section himself.

The bundle has three parts. The first holds letters from the dean's nephew, Don Luis de Vargas. The second, called Paralipomena, tells what the letters leave out. The third is an epilogue of letters from the nephew's father. The editor admits there is little plot, so the interest lies inside the people.

In the first letter, dated March 22, Luis writes from the town he left at ten. The orchards and violets delight him, and nobody understands why a rich heir would want to be a priest.

A found bundle of letters lets the reader watch a conscience at work from the inside.

How it ends (spoiler)

Luis meets Pepita in secret on the eve of Saint John. They speak, argue and finally embrace, and he gives up the priesthood. He fights the Count of Genazahar in a duel after the Count insults her, and wins. His father already knew everything through the dean's letters and gladly blesses the match. They marry a month later and live in lasting happiness, with a son, a prosperous home and a deep, comfortable faith.
