W przededniu in short

A restless young woman named Elena meets three men who offer her three ways to live. Shubin gives her charm and art, Bersenyev gives her loyalty and learning, and Insarov gives her a cause that asks for everything. She chooses the cause, and the choice carries her away from her family and her country.

What W przededniu is about

Two young men lie on the grass under a lime tree on a blazing day in 1853, near Moscow. One is a sculptor who wants happiness and wants to come first. The other is a shy scholar who asks whether anything is higher than happiness.

Ivan Turgenev published On the Eve in 1860, setting it in the summer before the Crimean War. At its center is Elena Stahov, a twenty-year-old who longs to do real good. Three men circle her: Shubin the sculptor, Bersenyev the scholar, and Insarov, a stern Bulgarian who lives for the freedom of his country. You get a love story, a comedy of a Moscow household and a portrait of a generation.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy Russian fiction with warm, funny side characters, or novels where a love story tests ideals and a young woman's choice drives the plot.

The story in 10 parts

Two friends argue about happiness and higher aims

The novel opens on one of the hottest days of 1853, on the bank of the Moskva River. Bersenyev is tall, awkward and thoughtful. Shubin is fair, charming and a gifted sculptor.

Shubin teases his friend for gazing at nature instead of living. Happiness is what everyone wants, he says, and he means to win it. Bersenyev replies softly that something higher must exist. Art, country, science and freedom can unite people, while happiness divides them. Shubin answers with a joke about pineapples that nobody would eat if everyone offered them to others.

Bersenyev also mentions a new friend, a Bulgarian student named Insarov. Shubin guesses that a woman is on his friend's mind. She is Elena, the daughter of a family they both visit. The argument is also about how each man will love her.

The artist reaches for joy and the scholar believes in duty. A life may need more than happiness.
