Dawne historie miłosne in short

Old Love Stories gathers twelve short tales, with the final six set in successive centuries from the thirteenth to the eighteenth. Albertazzi claims that passions stay the same while customs change, and the stories test that claim with a fasting page, a bride on a roan horse, a monk in Jericho, a ghost in a bedsheet, and a count who takes a pulse. What you keep is a sense of how many forms love can take.

What Dawne historie miłosne is about

What would you do if a young page decided to eat nothing until the lady of the castle said yes? In the first tale of Old Love Stories, a page named Ugo does exactly that, and the lady must decide what to do before her husband comes home.

Adolfo Albertazzi, an Italian writer, signed the preface in Mantua in 1895. He gives twelve tales, from medieval castles and religious legends to the eighteenth century. His idea is plain: human passions stay the same, and only customs change.

Dla kogo. You will love this book if you enjoy short tales of love and trickery, castles and crusades, wit and passion, and one human feeling dressed in the costumes of six centuries.

The story in 8 parts

A page fasts for love and a horse waits

The book opens in the Middle Ages with two tales of love that cannot be spoken aloud. In The Stubborn Page, set at Ripalta Castle, Ugo is a page raised almost like a son by the lord. Lady Ginevra, the lord's cheerful young wife, laughs at his pranks and sings at her window.

At fifteen Ugo hears her singing far above him and understands whom he loves. When the lord rides off to a tournament, Ugo declares himself, and she drives him out in anger. Then he vows to eat nothing until she grants his wish. The lord comes home, and she must explain herself with her husband at the bedside.

The second tale, The Roan, is darker. Giovanna and the poor knight Raimondo speak every night across a castle moat, because her miserly father will not hear of the match. Her plan is that his uncle will pretend to give him land, to be handed back after the wedding. But the uncle sees Giovanna and wants her for himself. He betrays his nephew, and Raimondo offers the loan of his gentle roan as the bride's mount.

Love grows from small things, and it will not be argued out of its goal.
