Obłomow in short

Oblomov is the story of a good man who cannot get up. Goncharov begins with his bed and his debts, adds visitors who show other ways to live, and then goes into the dream of Oblomovka, where the habit was born. Schtoltz arrives to stir him, Olga arrives to love him, and both find that a push from outside lasts only as long as the pushing.

What Obłomow is about

What would it take to make you leave your bed? In a flat on Gorokhovaia Street in Saint Petersburg, a gentle man named Ilya Ilyich Oblomov cannot get up. He is a little over thirty, kind, and clever enough to see exactly what he is wasting.

Oblomov is a novel by the Russian writer Ivan Goncharov. It follows one man from a morning in bed to a life shaped by the people who try to move him. Goncharov builds it from small things, a dressing gown, a pair of slippers, a quarrel over a handkerchief, until they weigh as much as a fate. You will meet a loyal servant, busy friends, a schemer, a tireless boyhood friend, and a young woman who sings and asks questions.

Dla kogo. Readers who enjoy warm, funny portraits, quarrels between servants and masters, and romances sparked by song will love this novel. It also suits lovers of Russian fiction about habit, friendship, and the quiet choices that shape a life.

The story in 10 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

Oblomov lies in bed and cannot decide

The novel opens on a spring morning on Gorokhovaia Street. Oblomov lies in bed in a roomy Eastern dressing gown. Today he has woken at eight, far earlier than usual, and he is troubled.

A letter from the steward of his country estate says that drought threatens most of the crops. Oblomov has long planned to reform the estate, but the plan is still unfinished. He resolves to get up, wash, drink tea, and think it over. Instead he drinks his tea in bed and decides that lying down cannot harm his thinking.

Over the next hour he calls Zakhar, his old valet, again and again, for the letter, for a handkerchief, for nothing at all. Meanwhile the bills arrive, and the building manager wants the flat for someone else.

Oblomov is neither stupid nor cruel, and his face is full of kindness. But his will has gone soft, and every duty is handed on to tomorrow. Putting a problem off does not make it smaller.
